Yecheon-gun, South Korea – For travelers seeking an authentic glimpse into Korea's past, far from the neon glow of its major cities, the historic Samgang Jumak (Three River Tavern) in Yecheon County, Gyeongsangbuk-do province, offers a truly unique experience. This humble, traditionally styled tavern, the last of its kind remaining along the 700-li (approximately 275 km) stretch of the Nakdong River, serves as a captivating cultural time capsule.

The Charm of Samgang Jumak

Samgang Jumak, which means "Three River Tavern," gets its name from its location at the confluence of the Nakdong River and two tributaries, the Naeseongcheon and Geumcheon. Dating back to around 1900, during the late Joseon Dynasty, this tavern was once a vital stop for merchants (bobusang), boatmen, and travelers navigating the river. It provided a welcome break, offering simple meals, traditional Korean rice wine (makgeolli), and lodging.

The building itself is small but holds immense cultural value, designated as a Gyeongsangbuk-do Folklore Cultural Heritage. Visitors can appreciate its traditional architecture and imagine the bustling life of the old ferry crossing. Inside, look for the historical detail: the walls of the kitchen are said to have marks etched by the illiterate tavern mistress as a way of keeping a ledger for customers' tabs. Today, the surrounding area has been developed into the Samgang Cultural Complex, allowing guests to enjoy the historical atmosphere while offering modern amenities and cultural programs.

Essential Visitor Information

For foreign travelers, navigating to this scenic, rural location requires a bit of planning.

Address

The official address for the site is: 27, Samgangni-gil, Pungyang-myeon, Yecheon-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Republic of Korea (Korean: 경상북도 예천군 풍양면 삼강리길 27)

Getting There (Transportation)

Samgang Jumak is best reached by car, as it offers the most direct and convenient access to this rural area.

By Car/Taxi: From major hubs like Seoul, the journey takes approximately 3 to 4 hours. Use the address or search for "Samgang Jumak" on GPS/navigation apps. Parking is generally available at the Samgang Cultural Complex.
By Public Transportation: Reaching Yecheon County itself is possible via bus or train. However, once in Yecheon, local transportation (such as a local bus or taxi) is necessary to reach the Samgang Jumak area, which can be less frequent. Visitors may find it easiest to hire a taxi from the nearest major bus or train terminal. Consider joining a local day tour from a larger city like Busan or Daegu, as these often include transportation to Samgang Jumak and other nearby attractions.

Nearby Attractions

Your visit to Samgang Jumak can easily be paired with several other stunning historical and natural sites in the vicinity.

Hoeryongpo Village (회룡포): Often described as a 'village on an island within the land,' this remarkable site is a traditional village almost completely encircled by the Naeseongcheon River. Visitors can get a breathtaking panoramic view from the Hoeryongpo Observatory.
Samgang Cultural Complex: Located right next to the tavern, this complex includes the Bobusang Cultural Experience Village (dedicated to the traveling merchants of the past) and an exhibition hall focused on river culture, providing richer context for the tavern's history.
Gyeongcheondae Cliff (경천대): A scenic spot along the Nakdong River featuring beautiful cliffs and a pavilion, offering wonderful views and hiking opportunities.

Samgang Jumak is more than just an old building; it is a doorway to the soul of Korea's river culture and history. Don't miss the chance to savor a bowl of makgeolli and traditional pancakes here, experiencing the tranquility of a bygone era.
