Bolu, Türkiye – The death toll from a devastating fire that engulfed a 12-story wooden hotel at the Kartalkaya ski resort in northwestern Türkiye has tragically risen to 76, with nine individuals detained for questioning in connection with the incident. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed the grim news on Tuesday, stating that search and rescue operations have been concluded.

"Unfortunately, the number of lives lost has increased to 76. Our teams have finalized their search efforts, and investigations are ongoing," Minister Yerlikaya told reporters at the scene.

The fire, which erupted in the early hours of Tuesday, rapidly consumed the wooden structure. Initial investigations point to the restaurant area on the fourth floor as the likely origin of the blaze, which then spread to the upper levels.

In response to this tragic event, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared a national day of mourning on Wednesday. "Those who caused such a disaster in any way, those who have negligence and fault will be held accountable before the law," President Erdogan emphasized during a press conference following a cabinet meeting.

The hotel was occupied by 238 guests during the peak holiday season, highlighting the scale of the tragedy.

Kartalkaya, a renowned ski resort nestled in the Koroglu mountains approximately 300 kilometers east of Istanbul, is a popular winter destination for both domestic and international tourists.
