South Korea's Path to Round of 32 Grows Perilous Following Australia-Paraguay Draw

The South Korean men’s national football team faces an increasingly daunting challenge in its quest to reach the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted by North and Central American nations. The outlook for the Taeguk Warriors dimmed significantly after a 0-0 stalemate between Australia and Paraguay in the final match of Group D on June 26 (KST).

The match, held at the Bay Area Stadium in San Francisco, ended in a draw, a result that proved detrimental to South Korea’s hopes of securing a knockout stage berth via the "best third-placed teams" criteria.

With this result, both Australia and Paraguay concluded the group stage with an identical record of one win, one draw, and one loss, each accumulating four points. Australia secured the second-place spot in Group D due to a superior goal difference, earning an automatic entry into the Round of 32. Paraguay, occupying third place with four points, has significantly strengthened its position to advance as one of the eight highest-ranked third-placed teams across all groups.

This development relegated South Korea—currently holding a record of one win and two losses with three points and a goal difference of -1 in Group A—to sixth place in the comparative ranking of third-placed teams. For South Korea, the most favorable scenario would have been an Australian victory, which would have kept Paraguay’s point total at three. Instead, the shared points between the two sides have introduced another competitor with four points, narrowing the margin for error for the South Korean squad.

The impact of this result on South Korea’s prospects is starkly reflected in data projections. The analytics firm Opta, which had estimated South Korea’s probability of advancing to the Round of 32 at 87.6% following the loss to South Africa, slashed that figure to 54.45% in the wake of the Group D finale.

In another Group D encounter held simultaneously at Los Angeles Stadium, Turkey concluded its tournament on a high note by defeating co-host nation the United States 3-2. Despite having already been eliminated from contention, the Turkish side displayed resilience. The U.S. took an early lead in the third minute via Auston Trusty, but Turkey responded with goals from Arda Güler and Orkun Kökçü to turn the tide. Although the U.S. leveled the score in the 49th minute through a spectacular strike by Sebastian Berhalter, Kaan Ayhan secured a dramatic victory for Turkey with a decisive goal in the eighth minute of second-half stoppage time.

Despite the setback, the United States maintained its hold on the top spot in Group D with two wins and one loss, advancing to the Round of 32. The U.S. is scheduled to face Bosnia and Herzegovina, the third-placed team from Group B, in their opening knockout stage match on July 2. Meanwhile, group runner-up Australia is set to compete for a spot in the Round of 16 against the second-placed team from Group G on July 4 at Dallas Stadium.

As the tournament progresses, the pressure on the South Korean team intensifies. The narrow path remaining requires a meticulous analysis of the final standings in other groups, as the competition for the remaining wildcard spots remains fierce. With the margin for advancement shrinking, the national team must prepare for the final permutations that will determine whether they continue their journey in this historic tournament.
