Sokcho City and the Gangwon Tourism Foundation (GTF), led by CEO Choi Seong-hyun, proudly announced the arrival of the massive, United States-flagged cruise ship "Noordam" at Sokcho Port on Saturday, April 19th. This significant event marks a promising step towards revitalizing cruise tourism in the Gangwon province of South Korea.

The "Noordam," a grand vessel weighing in at 82,318 gross tons, carried approximately 2,500 passengers and crew members. The ship gracefully entered Sokcho Port around 5:30 AM and is scheduled to depart at 3:00 PM the same day. This visit is part of a larger itinerary for the "Noordam," which likely includes other ports in Northeast Asia, showcasing the growing appeal of this region for international cruise lines.

To warmly welcome the arriving passengers and enhance their experience of the local culture, the Gangwon Tourism Foundation and Sokcho City have jointly organized a series of traditional performances and interactive cultural programs. Upon the ship's arrival, passengers were greeted with captivating performances of Sokcho's traditional Samgomu dance (a three-drum dance) and a vibrant Lion Dance, offering a colorful introduction to Korean artistic traditions.

Inside the cruise terminal's first-floor waiting area, several cultural experience booths have been set up to immerse the international visitors in the beauty of Korean heritage. These include opportunities to try on Hanbok, the elegant traditional Korean attire, and participate in Hanbok calligraphy experience, allowing them to create personalized souvenirs with Korean characters. These hands-on activities provide a more engaging and memorable introduction to Korean culture beyond mere observation.

Recognizing the importance of accessibility for tourists, a complimentary shuttle bus service has been arranged to connect the Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market and Sokcho Port. This initiative aims to encourage passengers to explore the local market, known for its fresh seafood and regional specialties, thereby directly contributing to the local economy. Furthermore, an "Abai Beach Lounge" has been specially created near the picturesque Abai Beach. This dedicated space offers cruise tourists a comfortable area to relax, enjoy the scenic coastal views, and soak in the natural beauty of the region. Abai Beach is a well-known attraction in Sokcho, famous for its unique "Abai Village" established by North Korean refugees and its stunning seaside scenery.

In a concerted effort to boost the local economy, the event also features special product and souvenir booths operated primarily by local small business owners. These booths offer a variety of regional specialties and unique souvenirs, providing passengers with opportunities to purchase authentic local goods. Additionally, various complimentary souvenirs and snacks are being provided to further enhance passenger satisfaction and create a positive impression of Sokcho and the Gangwon province.

Choi Seong-hyun, CEO of the Gangwon Tourism Foundation, emphasized the significance of this arrival, stating, "The docking of the Noordam signifies the starting gun for the resurgence of Gangwon-style cruise tourism in 2025." He further added, "By expanding the number of cruise ship calls centered around Sokcho Port, we aim to inject vitality into the local tourism industry and economy."

This event is particularly noteworthy as the tourism industry in the region, like many others globally, has been working towards recovery following the disruptions of recent years. The arrival of a large cruise ship like the "Noordam" demonstrates the potential for Gangwon province to once again become a prominent destination for international cruise lines and tourists.

Sokcho Port's strategic location on the eastern coast of South Korea offers access to stunning natural landscapes, including the nearby Seoraksan National Park, renowned for its breathtaking mountain scenery, hiking trails, and temples. This proximity to natural attractions, combined with Sokcho's own cultural and culinary offerings, makes it an attractive port of call for cruise itineraries in the region.

The Gangwon Tourism Foundation has been actively working to promote the region as a premier cruise destination, highlighting its unique blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and warm hospitality. The successful docking of the "Noordam" is a testament to these efforts and signals a positive outlook for the future of cruise tourism in Gangwon province. It is anticipated that more cruise ships will include Sokcho in their itineraries in the coming seasons, bringing increased economic benefits and international recognition to the region. The collaborative efforts of Sokcho City and the Gangwon Tourism Foundation in providing a memorable and welcoming experience for the "Noordam" passengers are crucial in establishing Sokcho as a preferred port of call in Northeast Asia's dynamic cruise tourism market.
