Dar es Salaam - As Tanzania strives to unlock the potential of its digital economy, building trust among citizens and stakeholders is paramount for widespread adoption and participation, according to key officials.
Dr. Nkundwe Mwasaga, Director General of the Information and Communication Technologies Commission (ICTC), emphasized the critical role of trust in fostering a thriving digital economy during a recent data sensitization workshop organized by the Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC).
“Trust is the cornerstone of any successful digital economy,” Dr. Mwasaga said. "Without trust, citizens will be hesitant to embrace digital platforms and engage in online economic activities, hindering the development of a truly inclusive digital society."
He stressed the need for a people-centered approach to digital economy development, ensuring that citizens can confidently and securely participate in online economic activities.
"The government is committed to creating a trustworthy and secure digital environment through initiatives like the PDPC," Dr. Mwasaga added. "This will empower citizens to reap the full benefits of the digital economy."
Key Government Initiatives
To bolster trust and facilitate the growth of the digital economy, the Tanzanian government has undertaken several key initiatives:
Digital Economy Strategy Framework: Launched by President Samia Suluhu Hassan in July 2024, this 10-year framework outlines a roadmap for digital economy development, emphasizing the need for strong governance and robust digital infrastructure.
National ICT Policy 2024: This policy provides a comprehensive framework for the development and regulation of the ICT sector in Tanzania.
National Electronic Data Sharing and Exchange Guidelines: These guidelines aim to facilitate secure and efficient data sharing across government agencies and with the private sector.
Tanzania Digital Public Infrastructure Blueprint 2024: This blueprint outlines the key infrastructure components necessary for a thriving digital economy, such as high-speed internet connectivity and data centers.
Tanzania Digital Compatibility and Standardization Framework 2024: This framework aims to ensure interoperability and compatibility among different digital systems and technologies.
Government Restructuring for Enhanced Focus
In a recent cabinet reshuffle, President Samia Suluhu Hassan streamlined the responsibilities of the Ministry of Information, Communication, and Information Technology to allow for greater focus on implementing key strategic plans, including the digital economy strategy and the launch of a national satellite.
Conclusion
By prioritizing trust, investing in robust digital infrastructure, and streamlining government operations, Tanzania is laying the foundation for a thriving digital economy that can empower citizens, drive economic growth, and improve the quality of life for all Tanzanians.
