The Singapore River is set to be revamped with eco-friendly solar-powered electric ferries. Singaporean tech startup Pyxis announced that it will deploy 10 solar-powered electric ferries on the Singapore River within this year. The first two vessels will begin operations in April, and the remaining eight will be delivered one by one every other month.

This project marks a significant step towards building an eco-friendly transportation system on the Singapore River, with Pyxis aiming to replace half of the 20 vessels owned by local operator WaterB with solar-powered electric ferries.

Each vessel is equipped with solar photovoltaic (PV) panels capable of generating up to 22kWh of electricity per day, designed to allow continuous sailing even at night by anchoring during the day. In particular, by applying V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid) technology, it supplies surplus power to the local power grid and also acts as a solar power plant supplying electricity to coastal users when not in operation during the day.

A Pyxis official said, "The introduction of these solar-powered electric ferries will contribute not only to building an eco-friendly transportation system on the Singapore River but also to spreading sustainable energy solutions." He added, "We will continue to create a cleaner and more sustainable urban environment through innovative technologies."

Citizens and tourists traveling on the Singapore River are expected to enjoy a more pleasant trip on eco-friendly ferries without noise and fumes from April.
