SEOUL — Sempio, South Korea’s leading food company renowned for its fermentation expertise, has announced the signing of a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Korea Food Research Institute (KFRI). This partnership aims to bolster cooperation in developing high-value-added food products and creating innovative market opportunities through cutting-edge food technology.
The official signing ceremony took place on March 5 at Sempio’s headquarters in Jung-gu, Seoul. The event was attended by Park Jin-sun, CEO of Sempio Foods, and Baek Hyun-dong, President of KFRI, both of whom expressed a strong commitment to advancing the nation's food industry competitiveness.
A Synergy of Tradition and Science
KFRI, established in 1987, stands as the only government-funded research institution in South Korea dedicated entirely to the food sector. It specializes in developing original technologies, enhancing foundational food science, and discovering functional materials that improve health and wellness.
By aligning Sempio’s decades of manufacturing excellence with KFRI’s robust R&D capabilities, the two organizations plan to lead the digital and biological transformation of the Korean food landscape.
Key Areas of Strategic Cooperation
According to the agreement, Sempio and KFRI will focus on several core pillars of collaboration:
-Joint R&D and Government Projects: The two entities will co-plan and execute national-level research projects to secure future growth engines.
-Commercialization Support: This includes the transfer of advanced technologies to the private sector, trial production of prototypes, and obtaining official product certifications to ensure quality and safety.
-Global Expansion: KFRI will provide technical support and information exchange regarding international regulations and consumer trends, helping Sempio’s innovative products penetrate new overseas markets.
-Talent Cultivation: Both organizations will share their R&D infrastructure and provide educational support to foster a new generation of food technology experts.
"This collaboration is a significant step toward integrating traditional flavors with modern scientific innovation," said a spokesperson for Sempio. "Through our partnership with KFRI, we aim to deliver healthier, more sustainable, and high-quality food solutions to consumers both at home and abroad."
The MOU is expected to serve as a catalyst for the "K-Food" wave, moving beyond simple exports to establishing a sophisticated technological framework for global food security and functional nutrition.
