"Unveiling Modern Daejeon: Restoration of 1937 City Hall Reveals Original Features"

Daejeon, South Korea - The city of Daejeon offered a first look at the ongoing restoration project of its inaugural City Hall, a significant modern architectural landmark dating back to 1937. The unveiling on March 26th showcased the initial successes of the dismantling phase, revealing key structural and decorative elements from the building's original construction.

Built in 1937, the structure faced potential demolition after multiple changes in ownership. However, the current municipal administration has prioritized its preservation, initiating a meticulous restoration to honor its cultural heritage.

The recent dismantling work, conducted between December and late February, involved the removal of later additions, exposing the 1937 framework. City officials confirmed the survival of original columns, beams, and wall structures. Notably, the location of original windows, ceiling moldings, and an impressive coffered domed ceiling have also been identified.

Adding to the optimism surrounding the project, remnants of historical features like restrooms and the projection room stairs have been discovered, despite some deterioration.

With the original architectural plans unfortunately lost, Daejeon City is employing a comparative analysis approach. Architectural drawings of the Daegu Public Hall (1931) and Gunsan Public Hall (1934), retrieved from the National Archives' Joseon Governor-General's Office documents, are being used as references to ensure an accurate restoration.

Daejeon Mayor Lee Jang-woo emphasized the building's historical importance, stating, "The first city hall building, which began as the Daejeon Public Hall, embodies the history and identity of Daejeon. As the only preserved local public hall building from the Japanese colonial era, it holds national architectural significance." He further added, "We are committed to restoring its authenticity as a cultural heritage and transforming it into a representative space that all Daejeon citizens can be proud of and cherish."

The city is inviting the public to witness the progress firsthand during a special open house event on April 4th (Friday) and 5th (Saturday). Furthermore, an international academic conference is scheduled for May, where renowned architects from both Korea and abroad will discuss the preservation and future utilization of the First Daejeon City Hall.

Detailed plans for the building's future use are expected following the completion of an architectural planning service in May. Prior to finalizing these plans, the city will also seek input from its citizens.
