Taltal, Chile – Colbún, a leading Chilean energy company, has successfully completed the construction of its Horizonte wind farm, marking a significant milestone in the country’s transition to renewable energy. The project, located in the commune of Taltal, in the Antofagasta Region, features 140 wind turbines with a total installed capacity of 816 MW, capable of generating approximately 2,450 GWh of clean energy annually.

Government Officials Celebrate Achievement

The completion of the wind farm was celebrated with a visit from Chilean Ministers of Finance and Energy, Mario Marcel and Diego Pardow, respectively. Joining them were Colbún executives and regional authorities.

Minister Marcel emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in achieving such large-scale projects, while Minister Pardow highlighted the need for streamlined permitting processes to accelerate renewable energy development.

A Catalyst for Regional Development With a total investment of approximately US$900 million, the Horizonte wind farm has already contributed significantly to the local economy, generating over $16 billion in purchases and contracts with regional suppliers and labor.

To further strengthen its presence in the region, Colbún announced plans to open a new office in Antofagasta in early 2025, supporting the development of additional renewable energy projects.

Community Engagement and Education

In addition to its environmental benefits, the Horizonte project has also made a positive impact on the local community through various initiatives:

Job creation: The project has provided employment opportunities for over 407 people from the region, including 70 women.
Educational programs: Colbún has launched the Horizonteduca program, which provides students with training in renewable energy and offers internships.
Archaeological preservation: The Horizonte Histórico program aims to educate young people about the region's archaeological and cultural heritage.

A Bright Future for Clean Energy

The completion of the Horizonte wind farm is a testament to Colbún's commitment to sustainable development and Chile's ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. As the country continues to expand its renewable energy capacity, projects like Horizonte will play a vital role in powering the nation's future.
