Asunción, Paraguay — Paraguay's maquila industry recorded exports of $295 million in the first quarter of 2025, marking a significant growth of 20% compared to the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MIC). This increase in exports has not only boosted economic activity but has also had a positive impact on job creation, with 32,538 new jobs generated by March.

The latest report from the National Council of Export Maquila Industries (Cnime) reveals that 306 new jobs were added in March alone, representing an increase of 7,149 jobs compared to March of the previous year. These figures firmly establish the maquila system as one of the main drivers of the Paraguayan economy.

Exports from the maquila sector also saw a 14% increase in March 2025, reaching $98 million compared to the same month last year. In contrast, imports by the maquila industry amounted to $176 million, showing a 31% increase year-on-year.

Despite the rise in imports, the maquila sector's trade balance remains in surplus. Exports exceeded imports by 67%, demonstrating the high added value of the exported products.

Breaking down exports by item, auto parts lead the way, accounting for 31% of total exports, followed by clothing (18%), aluminum (17%), food products (11%), and plastics (7%). These five categories represent 84% of the total exports from the maquila industry.

Overall, the maquila industry is recognized for its significant contribution to Paraguay's economic growth through robust export expansion and substantial job creation.
