SEOUL, South Korea — Nexon, a global pioneer in the gaming industry, officially announced on June 4 that it has opened applications for its newly rebranded and completely restructured programming competition, the "Nexon Young Programmers Cup" (NYPC). Marking a significant departure from its decade-long traditional format, the tournament has undergone a comprehensive transformation designed to align youth software development with modern industrial paradigms.
Originally established and widely recognized as the "Nexon Youth Programming Challenge," the competition has shed its previous moniker to become the "Nexon Young Programmers Cup." Under its newly unveiled official slogan, "Break, Solve, Win," the tournament shifts from traditional algorithmic problem-solving to an AI-driven, strategic programming paradigm, presenting an advanced competitive stage for aspiring computer scientists.
The overhaul extends beyond the name, representing a holistic restructuring of the tournament’s schedule, registration eligibility, competitive tracks, and award structures. Most notably, the 2026 iteration introduces a dual-track framework tailored to different educational demographics: the "Rookie Track" for youths aged 14 to 18, and the "Master Track" designated for university students aged 19 and older.
The two tracks feature fundamentally distinct problem-solving methodologies and participation formats. The Rookie Track operates as an individual competition focused on heuristic problems, where there are no fixed answers. Instead, participants must engineer personalized, highly optimized strategies to maximize their scores. Conversely, the Master Track is structured as a team-based competition where participants build autonomous AI agents that face off in direct simulation matches, testing their capacity to predict and counter opposing tactics.
In a historic first for the competition, generative AI tools are officially sanctioned for use across all stages, reflecting the evolving technological landscape. The competition environment supports 12 major programming languages, including industry standards such as C, C++, Python, and Java, providing an inclusive framework for diverse engineering approaches.
To provide optimal conditions for participants, Nexon has strategically concentrated the competitive timeline within the summer vacation period. The preliminary online qualifiers will commence with the Master Track from June 29 to July 8, followed by the Rookie Track from July 10 to July 19. During these windows, participants are permitted to access the online testing environment and solve problems at their own convenience. Top-performing contestants from both divisions will secure invitations to the offline finals, which will take place on August 29.
The total prize pool for this year’s competition is valued at 50 million KRW, with both tracks offering a comprehensive tier of accolades, including Winner, Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards. Reflecting the national prestige of the event, the absolute top performer in each track will be honored with the prestigious Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award. Additional top-tier accolades include the President of the Korea Creative Content Agency Award, the Chairman of the Game Culture Foundation Award, and the Chairman of the Nexon Foundation Award. Furthermore, Nexon is anchoring the competition to concrete professional opportunities. High-achieving laureates from the Master Track will be granted exclusive admission into Nexon’s experiential corporate internship program, allowing them to translate competitive success directly into practical industry experience.
Expanding its geographical reach, NYPC 2026 will welcome international competitors for the first time by opening the Master Track to university students from Vietnam. Nexon has initiated extensive promotional campaigns across major Vietnamese universities. Top-performing Vietnamese teams during the online qualifiers will receive all-expenses-paid invitations to South Korea, ensuring they can compete in the live offline finals under identical conditions as domestic participants. This initiative serves as a pilot project to validate the global scalability of Nexon's established talent cultivation framework.
"We hope that through the newly designed NYPC, participants will learn to collaborate dynamically with AI, design their own strategies, and discover optimal solutions," stated Kim Jung-wook, Chairman of the Nexon Foundation. "We look forward to witnessing their intellectual growth throughout this challenging process."
To celebrate the launch and communicate these sweeping changes, Nexon released a high-energy official promotional video featuring legendary South Korean eSports commentator Jun Jeon-yub. The promotional material captures the thrilling, game-like intensity of the newly transformed tournament and is currently available on the official NYPC website and major media channels.
