Gyeongju Donggungwon: A New Era for a Silla-Inspired Garden

Gyeongju—the ancient capital of the Silla Kingdom—has long been a repository of Korea's rich history. Today, this legacy is revitalized not only through its monuments but also in new cultural spaces like Gyeongju Donggungwon, a theme park that serves as a modern homage to the city's royal past.

Conceptualized from the historical narrative of the Silla Kingdom's 30th monarch, King Munmu, who meticulously crafted a sprawling garden at his separate palace, Donggung, this contemporary interpretation was officially established in 2013. The facility draws its inspiration directly from the fabled Donggung and Wolji Pond, meticulously detailed in the Samguk Yusa historical text. It stands as a testament to the Silla's sophisticated appreciation for natural beauty and architectural grandeur.

At the heart of the complex lies the Donggung Botanical Garden, a magnificent structure built in the dignified style of a Silla-era Hanok. The Main Hall presents a unique journey through five Silla-themed gardens, each infused with symbolic elements from renowned cultural assets like the Cheonmado and the serene Wolji Pond. Complementing this historical space is the more recent Second Hall, opened in 2016, which offers a contemporary, therapeutic experience with its thoughtfully curated collection of healing plants.

Adjacent to the botanical garden is the Bird Park, an architectural marvel shaped like a massive bird's nest. This aviary is a sanctuary for over 3,000 birds representing 250 species from across the globe. What distinguishes this facility is its foundational philosophy: the welfare of the birds is paramount. Visitors find spacious, open habitats that prioritize the freedom of the animals over conventional enclosures, with minimal barriers allowing for a more immersive and respectful interaction. The feeding experience, in particular, has become a highlight, fostering a unique connection between visitors and the park's inhabitants.

Beyond these main attractions, Donggungwon is a hub for hands-on learning and leisure. The agricultural facilities offer seasonal activities such as fruit picking and year-round crafts like pressed flower art, bridging the gap between urban life and rural tradition. An enchanting outdoor musical fountain further enhances the experience, providing a visually and audibly stunning spectacle that captivates all who visit.

Gyeongju Donggungwon is more than a simple tourist destination; it is a meticulously crafted landscape where ancient history and modern innovation converge, offering a serene escape and a profound connection to the Silla Kingdom's enduring legacy.
