INCHEON, SOUTH KOREA – In a proactive move to address the increasing water demands of its rapidly expanding urban and economic zones, Incheon Metropolitan City has announced a significant investment of 223.4 billion KRW (approximately $165 million USD) to construct seven new water reservoirs by 2028. The ambitious project aims to bolster the water supply infrastructure in key areas including the Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ), encompassing Songdo and Cheongna, burgeoning urban development sites, and the popular tourist destination of Ganghwa Island.
The Incheon Free Economic Zone, particularly Songdo International City, has witnessed substantial growth driven by the influx of large-scale, high-tech industrial complexes, notably the expansion of the Samsung Biologics campus. Coupled with the ongoing development of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminals, the Incheon New Port, and its associated logistics areas, the demand for potable water has risen sharply. To mitigate potential water shortages in this vital economic hub, the city will allocate 70.4 billion KRW for a second-phase expansion of the existing Pureun Songdo Reservoir. Following the commencement of design work in November 2023, construction is slated to begin next year, with completion anticipated by 2027. This expansion will significantly increase the reservoir's capacity, ensuring a reliable water supply for both industrial and residential needs in Songdo.
Similarly, Cheongna International City is bracing for a surge in water consumption due to several large-scale development projects, including the highly anticipated Cheongna Starfield shopping and entertainment complex, a new medical complex town, the iconic Cheongna City Tower, and the innovative Robot Land theme park. In response to this projected growth, Incheon City will invest 43.3 billion KRW to expand the Cheongna Reservoir. Design work commenced in January 2024, and the expanded reservoir is expected to be operational by 2028, providing the necessary water infrastructure to support Cheongna's burgeoning population and commercial activities.
Beyond the IFEZ, Incheon is also strategically addressing the water needs of its expanding western districts. The development of the third new town, Gyeyang Techno Valley, alongside significant urban development projects in the Seogu district, including the Geomam Station area and the Gyeongseo 2 district, is driving a steady increase in water demand. To cater to this growth, the city is actively pursuing the construction of the Gyeyang and Geomam reservoirs, with a combined budget of 48.2 billion KRW. Design work for the Gyeyang Reservoir began in April 2024, targeting a 2028 completion, while the Geomam Reservoir's design phase commenced in June 2023, with construction scheduled to start in 2025. These new reservoirs are expected to significantly enhance the quality of life for residents in these developing areas by ensuring a stable and reliable water supply.
Furthermore, Incheon is committed to addressing the unique water challenges faced by Ganghwa Island, a popular tourist destination renowned for its natural beauty and historical sites. The construction of bridges connecting the mainland to Gyodong and Seokmo Islands has led to a dramatic increase in tourist arrivals, particularly during weekends and peak seasons, resulting in significant water demand and recurring water shortage concerns. To resolve this issue, the city will invest 61.5 billion KRW in the construction of three new reservoirs in Hwado-myeon, Gyodong-myeon, and Samsan-myeon. Design work for these crucial projects began in July 2024, with construction slated to commence in 2027 and completion targeted for 2028. These new reservoirs will be instrumental in ensuring a consistent water supply for both the local population and the growing number of visitors to the island.
Park Jeong-nam, Head of the Incheon Metropolitan City Waterworks Authority, emphasized the long-term benefits of this comprehensive infrastructure investment, stating, "The completion of these reservoir expansion projects across Incheon will establish a more balanced and resilient water supply system for the entire metropolitan area. We are committed to proactive infrastructure development to ensure systematic water welfare for all our citizens and support the continued growth and prosperity of Incheon." This ambitious undertaking underscores Incheon's commitment to sustainable urban development and ensuring a high quality of life for its residents and businesses.
