A Culinary Journey Through Gyeongju: 5 Must-Try Traditional Korean Restaurants

Gyeongju, the ancient capital of Korea, is a city rich in history, culture, and, of course, delicious food. For international visitors looking to experience authentic Korean cuisine, these five restaurants offer a taste of Gyeongju's unique culinary heritage.


1. Yoseokgung (요석궁)
Step back in time at Yoseokgung, a high-end Korean traditional restaurant converted from a nobleman's house from the Silla Dynasty. Here, you can enjoy a refined royal court dining experience in a beautiful, historic setting.

Location: Inside the Gyochon Traditional Village, about a 10-minute walk from Daereungwon Tomb Complex.
Hours: 12:00 PM - 9:00 PM (Break time: 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM, Closed on Mondays)
Signature Dishes: Gyeongju's Choi Clan's traditional full-course meal, Silla traditional full-course meal.
 

2. Maetdol Sundubu (맷돌순두부)
For a hearty and comforting meal, head to Maetdol Sundubu. This restaurant specializes in soft tofu stew made from freshly ground soybeans. The silky tofu combined with a spicy broth is a local favorite.

Location: At the entrance of Bomun Tourism Complex, a 10-minute drive from Bulguksa Temple.
Hours: 8:00 AM - 9:00 PM (Open all year round)
Signature Dishes: Soft Tofu Stew, Seafood and Green Onion Pancake, Braised Tofu.
 

3. Wonjo Tteokgalbi Ssambap (원조떡갈비쌈밥)
Wonjo Tteokgalbi Ssambap is the perfect place to enjoy grilled short rib patties and fresh lettuce wraps. This restaurant is famous for its generous spread of side dishes and savory tteokgalbi, making it a truly satisfying meal.

Location: A 5-minute walk from Gyeongju Station and close to the Intercity Bus Terminal.
Hours: 10:00 AM - 9:00 PM (Closed on the first and third Tuesdays of each month)
Signature Dishes: Tteokgalbi Ssambap (grilled short rib patties with rice and lettuce wraps), Tteokgalbi set meal.
 

4. Gyochon Gam솥sikdang (교촌가마솥식당)
Experience a taste of home at Gyochon Gam솥sikdang, where you can enjoy a full-course meal featuring rice cooked in a traditional iron pot. This is an excellent choice for anyone who wants to try classic Korean home-style cooking.

Location: In Gyochon Traditional Village, a 15-minute walk from Cheomseongdae Observatory.
Hours: 11:00 AM - 8:00 PM (Closed on Tuesdays)
Signature Dishes: Iron Pot Rice Set Meal, Bulgogi Set Meal.
 

5. Palujeong Haejangguk (팔우정해장국)
For a taste of history, visit Palujeong Haejangguk, a century-old restaurant specializing in haejangguk, or "hangover soup." This is the place to try Gyeongju's traditional style of this beloved Korean dish.

Location: At the Palujeong Rotary, a 10-minute walk from Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond.
Hours: Open 24 hours (Open all year round)
Signature Dishes: Gyeongju-style Haejangguk, Beef Blood and Organ Soup.
After exploring Gyeongju's historic sites, these restaurants will add a delicious layer to your travel memories. Each one offers not just a meal, but a genuine connection to the city's rich past and vibrant culinary present.
