Alphabet Shares Plummet by $500B on Mixed Earnings and AI Spending Surge; Analysts View the Dip as a Buying Opportunity

Google’s parent company, Alphabet, experienced a historic market rout, with its stock plunging over 12% following third-quarter financial results that missed market expectations and highlighted worsening cash flows. Despite the short-term shock, South Korean brokerage firms and global investment banks are pointing to robust cloud growth and monetization potential in proprietary hardware as compelling reasons to view the sell-off as a strategic buying opportunity.

According to Investing.com, Alphabet shares closed down 12.6% at $283.82. The single-day drop wiped out approximately $500 billion (approx. 669 trillion won) in market capitalization—marking the second-largest single-day market cap loss in Wall Street history.

Growth Pains: AI Investments and Lower-Than-Expected Earnings

The sharp sell-off was triggered by underwhelming financial figures and a severe cash flow contraction driven by aggressive artificial intelligence (AI) investments.

*Revenue & Earnings: Alphabet reported third-quarter revenue of $127.58 billion, up 25% year-over-year, but below the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) consensus estimate of $128.22 billion. Earnings per share (EPS) came in at $2.12, falling short of the expected $3.02 due to valuation losses on Alphabet's stakes in SpaceX and Anthropic. Even excluding these losses, the adjusted EPS of $2.67 missed expectations.
*CapEx & Cash Flow: Capital expenditures (CapEx) surged to $51.36 billion—more than double the previous year. Meanwhile, operating cash flow dropped 13% to $42.29 billion. With capital investments reaching 121.4% of operating cash flow, Free Cash Flow (FCF) plunged into a deficit of $9.065 billion, marking two consecutive quarters of negative FCF.
*Working Capital & One-Offs: Kim Seung-hyuk, an analyst at Kiwoom Securities, noted that working capital contraction heavily impacted FCF. Factors included $3.2 billion spent on securing Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) inventory and a $5.2 billion payment for a 2018 European Union antitrust fine related to Android.
*Search Ad Growth Concerns: Search revenue grew 12% year-over-year to $63.35 billion, but quarter-over-quarter growth stagnated at just 0.1%, raising concerns that AI-driven search behavior is outpacing monetization speed.
Reflecting these headwinds, major global investment banks trimmed their price targets. Bank of America (BofA) lowered its target from $430 to $380, JPMorgan cut its target from $425 to $375, and Citi adjusted its target from $447 to $375.

Cloud Shines Amid Discontent

In stark contrast to core advertising pressures, Alphabet’s cloud business exceeded expectations by a wide margin.

Third-quarter cloud revenue skyrocketed 103% year-over-year to $30.71 billion, beating the consensus estimate of $29.15 billion by 5.3%. Operating income reached $11.12 billion, comfortably surpassing the $9.75 billion forecast, driven by surging corporate demand for AI infrastructure and accelerated deployment of proprietary TPU systems.

Alphabet's long-term outlook remains supported by a massive cloud order backlog totaling $561 billion, with 55% of this pipeline expected to convert into revenue over the next 24 months.

Domestic Brokerages: A Rare Entry Point

South Korean securities firms have interpreted the stock plunge as a mid-to-long-term investment window, arguing that the structural growth of the cloud division and AI-driven enhancements to core competencies outweigh short-term cash flow pressures.

"Even after factoring in lower advertising sales forecasts and increased R&D expenses, faster-than-expected growth in the cloud division more than offsets these concerns," said Kwon Young-bae, an analyst at Mirae Asset Securities. "Given unmatched cloud expansion and core business enhancements powered by AI, this short-term pullback presents an exceptional buying opportunity."
Valuation attractiveness has also improved significantly. Alphabet's 12-month forward price-to-earnings (PER) ratio has dropped to approximately 20x, offering a substantial discount from its peak.

Shim Ji-hyun, an analyst at Shinhan Securities, added, "Although corporate debt and FCF concerns are currently priced into the discount, operating leverage is being well-maintained despite higher depreciation and TPU hardware costs, making this sharp correction a long-term opportunity."
