The survey results released on the 6th showed that the actual weight of chicken products received by consumers is less than the gram weight that can be checked on delivery apps.
This is because current chicken weight labeling is based on the weight before cooking, and some Kyochon Chicken products had actual weights that were 30% less than the displayed weight.
The Korea National Council of Consumer Organizations compared the weights displayed on delivery apps and headquarters websites with the actual purchased chicken weights for products from five major chicken brands (Kyochon, BHC, BBQ, Goobne Chicken, and Cheogajip Yangnyeom Chicken).
According to the survey results, the actual weight of Kyochon's Fried Whole Chicken product was 30.5% less than the displayed weight.
Goobne Chicken's Original was 23.1% less.
A Kyochon official explained, "Even if you fry the same chicken, Kyochon cuts it into 23 pieces, so moisture evaporates and the batter is thin, causing the weight to decrease. Because the weight variance after cooking is large depending on different cooking methods for each company, we write the pre-cooking weight."
Conversely, BBQ's Golden Olive Chicken Yangnyeom Boneless had 17.6% more actual weight than the displayed weight.
Cheogajip Yangnyeom Chicken's Supreme Yangnyeom Chicken Boneless also had 17.2% more.
The Korea National Council of Consumer Organizations stated, "Standards for allowable differences between displayed weight and actual weight must be established," and added, "Consumers should be able to check whether the actual provided amount has decreased through display information."
The chicken weight labeling system is a system that mandates the display of pre-cooking weight for member stores belonging to top 10 chicken franchise headquarters in order to guarantee consumers' right to know.
It has been enforced since July 1st, and the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety manages companies that do not comply to fulfill their labeling obligations through corrective orders and other measures.
As a result of the Korea National Council of Consumer Organizations investigating the weight labeling status of the above five franchise headquarters in four delivery apps last August, most brands were displaying weights in the detailed descriptions of delivery menu items or in the menu selection items.
