Samsung Foundry Gains Momentum: Anthropic in Talks for AI Chip Production

Samsung Electronics’ foundry business is signaling a potential major milestone, as reports emerge that the company is in discussions with Anthropic, a leading global artificial intelligence (AI) model developer, regarding the production of cutting-edge AI semiconductors.

According to The Information, a prominent U.S. technology media outlet, Anthropic is actively exploring the use of Samsung’s advanced manufacturing infrastructure to power its next-generation AI hardware. Specifically, the discussions center on utilizing Samsung’s 2-nanometer (nm) process technology and state-of-the-art advanced packaging facilities. The 2nm process represents the current "holy grail" of the foundry industry, offering significantly higher chip density and power efficiency compared to existing solutions.

Strengthening Strategic Ties

The potential partnership follows a significant development in May 2026, when Anthropic announced that the world’s "Big Three" memory manufacturers had joined its Series H funding round as "strategic infrastructure partners." At the time, Anthropic highlighted that these memory companies are playing a pivotal role not only in supplying memory but also in the broader ecosystem of logic chip production. Industry analysts quickly identified that among the three—Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron—Samsung Electronics is the only entity capable of comprehensive logic chip manufacturing, fueling speculation about a deepening collaboration.

The Road Ahead

While the news has generated significant optimism, both parties remain cautious regarding the timeline. Anthropic noted that the project is currently in its early stages of development. The company is actively engaged in discussions with various chip design firms; however, it emphasized that the project has not yet reached the stage of detailed design finalization, prototyping, or mass production.

Strategic Implications for Samsung

For Samsung Electronics, securing Anthropic as a foundry client would be a transformative achievement. It would bolster Samsung’s portfolio, which already boasts a list of high-profile global tech leaders, including Tesla, Nvidia, and Apple.

Market experts suggest that if this partnership comes to fruition, it would solidify Samsung’s position as a premier alternative to TSMC in the high-demand AI chip market. As demand for sophisticated AI hardware continues to soar, the ability to provide a complete "one-stop shop" solution—integrating memory, logic chip design, and advanced packaging—positions Samsung as a critical backbone for the future of artificial intelligence.

As the AI industry shifts toward proprietary, high-performance chips, Samsung’s foundry unit appears poised to capture a significant portion of this growth, potentially reshaping the competitive landscape of the semiconductor industry. All eyes are now on the next steps of this collaboration, as the tech world awaits confirmation of a formal production roadmap.
