In a bold move to establish South Korea as a global leader in AI and aerospace, Hanwha Group announced on July 3rd that it will invest 55 trillion won (approximately $40 billion) by 2040. The announcement was made by Kim Dong-kwan, Vice Chairman of Hanwha Group, during the "Yeongnam Region Advanced Industry Development Vision Report," presided over by President Yoon Suk-yeol in Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province.
The ambitious strategy focuses on leveraging the Yeongnam region as the heart of the nation’s aerospace industrial ecosystem, aiming to foster regional economic growth while securing national sovereignty in space and defense.
Building a Comprehensive Space Infrastructure
Hanwha plans to construct a fully integrated space infrastructure based on its proprietary launch vehicles and satellite technology. The system is designed to create a seamless loop: space-based data collection, AI-driven analysis, and immediate integration into military command and operation decisions.
Hanwha Aerospace will spearhead the development of indigenous launch vehicles with an investment of 23 trillion won. This includes the establishment of specialized assembly plants and testing facilities, moving toward commercial launch services to ensure South Korea has its own independent capabilities to access space at any time.
Complementing this, Hanwha Systems will invest 20 trillion won in a constellation of high-resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites, space-based AI data centers, and low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite communication networks. The company aims to launch 64 SAR satellites by 2031 to ensure continuous, real-time monitoring. Furthermore, a "Korean Starlink" LEO network, consisting of 192 satellites, will provide high-speed data transmission, with plans to expand to over 250 satellites to extend coverage, including Arctic regions.
Revolutionizing Defense with AI
A cornerstone of Hanwha’s strategy is the creation of a "Defense AI Data Center" in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province. With an investment exceeding 10 trillion won, this facility will serve as the hub where satellite data, aerial drone feeds, and naval/ground force intelligence converge.
To ensure maximum security, the data center will be an independent, "closed-type" high-security system. It is designed to operate in parallel with the space-based data centers, ensuring that even if one component is neutralized, operational continuity remains intact.
Additionally, Hanwha is investing 2 trillion won to develop "Defense OS," a combat-specialized AI model tailored to the unique operational environment of the Korean Peninsula. Vice Chairman Kim emphasized, "South Korea will no longer be seen just as a nation with strong hardware. We will emerge as a country with the world's highest-level Defense AI capabilities."
A Vision for Sustainable Industrial Ecosystems
The initiative is deeply rooted in Hanwha’s commitment to regional development. Vice Chairman Kim highlighted the importance of a "virtuous cycle" where regional talent is nurtured locally, local enterprises compete on the global stage, and regional ecosystems secure the nation’s future.
"Our manned-unmanned teaming systems will not only guarantee independent national defense but also solidify South Korea’s status as a world-class defense power," Kim added. By linking the defense data center with Hanwha Energy’s power assets, the project also sets a model for sustainable, high-tech industrial growth.
Through this massive investment, Hanwha aims to redefine South Korea's role in the global arena, transforming the nation into an AI-powered space and defense powerhouse by 2040.
