Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) Secures Additional FA-50 Light Combat Aircraft Export Contract with the Philippines

Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) has signed an additional contract with the Philippine Department of National Defense for the export of 12 more FA-50PH light combat aircraft. This brings the total number of FA-50 aircraft destined for the Philippines to 24. The contract, valued at approximately $700 million (approximately 975.3 billion KRW), includes the aircraft and subsequent logistics support. KAI plans to deliver all 12 aircraft to the Philippines by 2030.

Enhanced Performance to Contribute to Philippine Air Force Modernization

The additional FA-50PH aircraft ordered will boast enhanced operational capabilities compared to existing models. Notably, the introduction of aerial refueling capabilities will significantly expand their operational range. Furthermore, the integration of an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar and advanced air-to-air and air-to-ground weapon systems is expected to substantially strengthen the Philippine Air Force's modernization and air defense capabilities. The AESA radar offers superior detection and tracking compared to traditional mechanical radars, enabling simultaneous tracking of multiple targets and maximizing combat efficiency. It also enhances the accuracy of ground strikes through integration with precision-guided munitions.

Successful Operational Experience and Trust Pave the Way for Re-contracting

This additional contract stems from the Philippine Air Force's positive experience operating the FA-50PH. In 2014, KAI initially signed a contract with the Philippines for 12 FA-50PH aircraft, completing deliveries by 2017. Since then, the FA-50PH has become a cornerstone fighter aircraft for the Philippine Air Force. KAI's reliable follow-up support played a crucial role in building operational trust, which was a significant factor leading to this re-order.

This process was underpinned by close cooperation among the Republic of Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), the Republic of Korea Air Force, the Agency for Defense Development (ADD), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the Philippines, and KAI. This demonstrates that South Korea's defense exports are not merely a corporate matter but the culmination of national capabilities.

Proven Combat Effectiveness and Enhanced International Standing

The FA-50PH cemented its combat effectiveness and earned the reputation of a "game-changer" during the 2017 Battle of Marawi on Mindanao Island. In the urban warfare against Islamic insurgents, the FA-50PH played a decisive role in suppressing the rebels with its precision strike capabilities.

In August 2024, the FA-50PH achieved the remarkable feat of being the first Philippine Air Force aircraft to deploy overseas. It participated in Exercise Pitch Black held at RAAF Base Darwin in Australia, where it showcased its excellent maneuverability and received high praise. Crucially, thanks to KAI's on-site maintenance support, the FA-50PH maintained a 100% operational readiness rate throughout the exercise, once again proving its reliability on the global stage. This signifies not only the aircraft's performance but also KAI's systematic maintenance and technical support capabilities being recognized internationally.

Stepping Stone for Southeast Asian and Global Market Expansion

This additional contract with the Philippines follows the export of 18 FA-50s to Malaysia in late 2023. This achievement is expected to further strengthen air power across Southeast Asia and increase regional interest and demand for the FA-50 platform. Moreover, this contract is poised to serve as a key catalyst, accelerating the adoption of the FA-50 by potential customers in Europe, the Middle East, and South America, thereby playing a crucial role in global market expansion.

In December 2024, KAI signed a Performance-Based Logistics (PBL) contract with the Philippines, the first such contract for export aircraft. This PBL agreement provides long-term maintenance and spare parts support, contributing to improved operational readiness and reduced life-cycle costs. PBL is an advanced logistics support model where payment is contingent upon achieving predefined performance targets, allowing customers to pursue both efficient operations and cost savings simultaneously.

Continuous Global Partnership Expansion and Product Portfolio Diversification

KAI continues to expand its global presence through reliable partnerships and a diversified product portfolio. It has exported the KT-1 basic trainer and T-50 advanced trainer to Indonesia and is currently cooperating on the joint development of the KF-21 fighter jet. In March 2025, KAI signed a Service Life Extension Program (SLEP) contract for Indonesian KT-1B aircraft, which is significant as the first performance improvement project for a South Korean export platform. SLEP extends the lifespan of aircraft and incorporates the latest technology to enhance performance, which is essential for long-term customer satisfaction and trust-building.

The FA-50 is KAI's flagship export model, and its proven operational record in the Philippines and other countries contributes to elevating the status of the South Korean defense industry. KAI plans to further diversify its export portfolio in the future with platforms such as the KUH-1 Surion utility helicopter, the Light Armed Helicopter (LAH), and the next-generation KF-21 fighter.

Kang Goo-young, President of KAI, stated, "The FA-50 has proven its capabilities in the Asian market, and the additional export to the Philippines, based on over a decade of operational trust, is a very encouraging development. We will continue to strengthen our position in the global defense market through customized performance upgrades and reliable follow-up support."
