Arsenal's Lewis-Skelly Cleared of Wrongful Red Card

London, England – Arsenal defender Miles Lewis-Skelly has had his red card from the match against Wolverhampton Wanderers overturned following a successful appeal. The English Premier League (EPL) announced on [Date] that after a thorough review, the Football Association (FA) had deemed the red card to be a clear error.

Lewis-Skelly was sent off during Arsenal’s match against Wolves on [Date] for a challenge on Matt Doherty. The decision sparked outrage among Arsenal fans and pundits alike, with manager Mikel Arteta expressing his disbelief at the referee’s call. The initial three-match ban imposed on the young defender has now been rescinded.

"We are very pleased with the outcome of the appeal," said an Arsenal spokesperson. "It was clear from the footage that Miles' challenge was not deserving of a red card."

The FA’s independent regulatory commission agreed, stating that the original decision was a “clear and obvious error.” This marks the third time this season that an EPL red card has been overturned, following similar incidents involving Bruno Fernandes of Manchester United and Christian Norgaard of Brentford.

Meanwhile, the official who issued the red card, referee Michael Oliver, has reportedly received serious threats. The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) condemned the threats and confirmed that the police have been involved.

"We are appalled by the threats made against Michael Oliver," said a PGMOL spokesperson. "Such behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated."

The incident has once again highlighted the increasing pressure on match officials in English football. With VAR technology becoming more prevalent, the scrutiny on referees has intensified.
