- Daejeon City collaborates with local university students to develop sports Kkumdori characters
- Hannam University and Mokwon University design students partner to promote 'First-Class Sports City'

Daejeon City is pushing forward the 'Kkum-ssi Family City Branding (Sports Sector)' project in collaboration with local university students to develop Kkumdori characters for various sports.

The core of this project is to create characters based on Daejeon City's representative mascots, 'Kkumdori' and 'Kkum-ssi Family,' with various sports as themes. Daejeon City plans to strengthen its sports marketing capabilities through this and actively utilize them as promotional materials and souvenirs at various athletic competitions and events.

Students from the Department of Convergence Design at Hannam University and the Department of Visual Design at Mokwon University are participating by undertaking character design as a course assignment. The course runs from March to June of this year, and the completed characters will be widely used in various sports events such as the National Sports Festival and the National Lifestyle Sports Festival, as well as on social media and online promotional content.

Through this project linked to their university coursework, students will have the opportunity to plan and design characters themselves, thereby enhancing their practical skills. It is also anticipated as a positive example of incorporating the creativity and talent of local university students into city promotion.

Daejeon City plans to systematically manage the various sports Kkumdori characters newly created through this project and to devise ongoing utilization plans for the future.

Meanwhile, the city developed the 'Fencing Kkumdori' character last year to foster fencing, in which Oh Sang-uk won a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, as Daejeon's representative sports brand. This character is actively used in various fencing competitions and sports events such as fencing schools.

Organizations or groups that need the 'Fencing Kkumdori' character design can contact the Daejeon City Sports Promotion Division (☎042-270-4481).

Jeong Tae-young, Director of the Daejeon Metropolitan City Sports and Health Bureau, said, "We expect that the sports Kkumdori characters, created with the unique ideas of local university students, will bring a fresh breeze to Daejeon City's sports marketing. We also hope that this process will be an opportunity for students to feel closer to and develop affection for Daejeon."
