Democrat Wins Texas State House Seat Despite Halting Campaign Over Past Fraud Conviction

In a surprising electoral twist, a Texas Democratic candidate who suspended her campaign after the revelation of a past felony conviction has narrowly defeated her Republican opponent.

Erica Romick, a political newcomer and former Walmart analyst running for the Texas House of Representatives in District 93, secured 50.5% of the vote in unofficial tallies, edging out Republican challenger Alan Blaylock, who garnered 49.5%. The narrow margin amounted to a difference of 810 votes.

The controversy erupted in September when a political action committee supporting the Republican candidate uncovered Romick's criminal history. According to federal court records, Romick was convicted in North Carolina in 2011 on three felony counts, including mortgage fraud, bank fraud, and conspiracy to commit money laundering, which resulted in a 63-month prison sentence.

Texas election law generally prohibits individuals convicted of felonies from holding public office unless they have received a pardon or had their civil rights restored.

As public scrutiny intensified, Romick halted her campaign activities. However, because the deadline for printing ballots had already passed, her name could not be removed. Under Texas regulations, votes cast for any candidate whose name remains on the ballot are counted as valid, regardless of their formal eligibility to serve.

District 93 encompasses northeast Fort Worth, Blue Mound, Saginaw, and Haslet. Local analysts suggest that many voters may have been unaware of Romick's suspended campaign, or alternatively, cast straight-ticket votes driven by partisan preferences rather than individual candidate scrutiny.

Lane Teles, executive director of the local Democratic party, noted that legal teams representing Tarrant County Democrats, the state party, and local election authorities are currently reviewing Romick's qualifications to take office. "We are working closely to interpret the laws accurately and find the best possible outcome for voters," Teles stated.

If Romick's eligibility is legally blocked, a special election could potentially be called for the district.

Defeated candidate Blaylock has signaled imminent legal action regarding Romick's qualification to assume office. In a public statement, Blaylock emphasized that preliminary vote counts do not automatically determine representation. "Voters deserve an election featuring fully qualified candidates competing fairly," Blaylock said, noting that Romick allegedly failed to disclose her felony record on candidate filing paperwork.

Romick has declined requests for comment from local media, though she previously indicated to the Dallas Morning News that she is awaiting guidance from her legal counsel.
