From Reading Culture to Carbon Neutrality: Goryeong-gun Shapes a Sustainable Future for People and Environment

GORYEONG — Goryeong County in Gyeongsangbuk-do is actively driving dual initiatives to enrich the cultural capacity of its residents while accelerating eco-friendly energy transitions for future generations. By fostering community communication through reading and establishing a resilient foundation for renewable energy, the local government is championing a well-rounded approach that puts both people and the planet at the forefront.

Promoting a Lifelong Reading Culture

As part of its cultural advancement efforts, the Goryeong Chapter of the Saemaul Mungo (Saemaul Library Movement) recently hosted the 46th Goryeong-gun Citizens' Reading Competition Awards Ceremony at the Goryeong Elementary School audiovisual hall.

The event brought together local leaders, educational officials, award recipients, and library members to celebrate the joy of reading and inspire a robust community-wide literary culture. Beyond personal growth, local officials emphasized that reading acts as an essential social bridge connecting diverse generations and strengthening neighborhood ties.

The Goryeong Chapter continues to spearhead various literacy campaigns throughout the year—including seasonal reading programs and the "Goryeong-gun One Book" reading movement. Moving forward, the county administration plans to collaborate closely with the local library network to ensure that reading remains a natural, everyday habit for residents of all ages.

Achieving National Recognition in Solar Energy

While cultivating a vibrant reading culture locally, Goryeong-gun has simultaneously earned national acclaim for its environmental and energy policies.

The county received the prestigious Minister of Climate, Energy, and Environment Award in the local government category at the 8th Korea Solar League Awards, held at the Government Sejong Convention Center. The nationwide event comprehensively evaluates municipalities, public institutions, and private organizations on their photovoltaic deployment records and greenhouse gas reduction efforts.

Goryeong-gun secured top honors by maintaining stellar solar power installation rates among basic local governments, expanding renewable energy infrastructure across public facilities, and designing forward-thinking energy transition policies. Judges particularly praised the county's integrated approach of combining clean energy expansion with targeted welfare support for energy-vulnerable populations, ensuring that sustainability and social welfare grow hand in hand.

Looking Ahead: Culture and Environment as Regional Competitiveness

Although cultural literacy and renewable energy target different spheres, they share a unified objective: building a sustainable and thriving community. County representatives noted that while literary programs cultivate the intangible intellectual assets of the residents, solar energy initiatives safeguard the region's environmental and economic longevity.

Local leaders stressed that these achievements must extend beyond temporary accolades and awards. By solidifying everyday literacy networks and ensuring that green energy policies translate into genuine cost savings and environmental benefits for residents, Goryeong-gun aims to establish itself as a premier model of sustainable regional innovation.
