San Marino Resident Falls Victim to "Pig Butchering" Crypto Scam

San Marino, CA - A San Marino resident lost a significant sum of money after falling victim to a sophisticated cryptocurrency scam earlier this month.

The victim, who was contacted by a woman claiming to be a "risk management specialist" from Singapore on Facebook, was persuaded to transfer thousands of dollars into an online crypto wallet. The victim initially observed a substantial increase in the value of their investment, which further convinced them of the scheme's legitimacy.

On January 10th, the victim agreed to meet with a "legitimate currency dealer" at a local coffee shop, bringing with them a larger amount of cash. They handed over the cash, expecting a further increase in their investment value. However, the following day, they discovered that the funds had vanished completely.

This incident exemplifies the "Pig Butchering" scam, a common tactic employed by fraudsters. In this scheme, scammers cultivate trust with victims online, often through social media platforms, before enticing them to invest in cryptocurrency. They demonstrate initial gains to lure victims into investing larger sums, ultimately disappearing with the stolen funds.

The California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) warns consumers about the inherent risks associated with cryptocurrency investments, emphasizing their lack of traditional financial protections such as deposit insurance and error resolution mechanisms. The DFPI urges extreme caution when discussing online funds with unknown individuals.

The FBI reports that Americans suffered over $5.6 billion in crypto-related scams in 2023.

The San Marino Police Department is actively investigating this case.
