Biofoundries are essential for the development of synthetic biology

[GLOBAL ECONOMIC TIMES]  “Biotechnology development takes a considerable amount of time. To advance synthetic biology, development time must be shortened as much as possible, and biofoundries play a key role in this.”

On the 26th, Professor Akihiko Kondo (Vice President) of Kobe University in Japan emphasized this at the '2024 Korean Society of Biological Engineering Fall Conference and International Symposium' held at the Jeju International Convention Center. This means that the development of synthetic biology, which is considered a game changer in the bio industry, requires the establishment of a biofoundry first. Professor Kondo introduced that he is researching a method to quickly and environmentally friendly production of active materials using biofoundries.

Synthetic biology is a technology that designs and produces life systems such as DNA, proteins, and artificial cells by introducing engineering technology concepts into life science, and biofoundry is an infrastructure that supports the development of experiments and manufacturing processes for this. The Ministry of Science and ICT will announce a specialized research center that will oversee research and development (R&D) related to the biofoundry construction project at the end of this month.

Professor Pimchai Chaiyen of VISTEC, Thailand's University of Science and Technology, who was the keynote speaker on the day, argued, "Actively developing and utilizing discarded organic matter as a resource can be an effort in the bio industry for carbon neutrality." . Professor Chai Yen is researching a bioconversion production process using enzymes, an eco-friendly synthesis method that can replace chemical synthesis that causes environmental problems.
