El Salvador's Rising Star: A Nation Transformed

El Salvador is rapidly ascending in global rankings for tourism, destinations, and national image, a feat largely attributed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its extensive diplomatic and consular network. This network has been instrumental in implementing strategies and actions to enhance the world's perception of the nation.

In February, El Salvador achieved 82nd place out of 175 countries in the 2025 Global Soft Power Index, a prestigious ranking by Brand Finance, a leading global brand valuation consultancy. This index, which hails El Salvador as a "rising star," also recognized it as the "fastest-growing nation brand globally," having climbed 35 positions in the overall rankings.

Global Recognition and Strategic Efforts

According to Brand Finance, the Global Soft Power Index is compiled from a survey of over 170,000 people across more than 100 countries, gathering data on the global perception of the 193 United Nations member states. "Thanks to the breadth of the survey, the Index is the world's most comprehensive study of national brand perceptions, providing a detailed analysis of the evolving status of Soft Power as nations grapple with significant global changes and challenges," Brand Finance states.

Foreign Minister Alexandra Hill emphasizes the Foreign Ministry's role in this ascent, highlighting the contributions of the diplomatic and consular network, as well as the Directorates of Economic Relations and Cultural, Gastronomic, and Sports Promotion. "This reflects the nation's ongoing efforts and strategic actions to strengthen its global positioning. This rise is indicative of progress in various areas, including security, economic promotion, international cooperation, and the projection of the country's image, among others," she stated.

Driving Forces Behind the Transformation

Several factors have contributed to El Salvador's remarkable transformation:

Enhanced Security: El Salvador has made significant strides in improving its security, once being one of the world's most violent nations. The government's efforts to combat gang violence and reduce crime rates have yielded positive results.
Tourism Growth: The tourism industry has experienced substantial growth, with the government investing in infrastructure development and promotional initiatives.
Economic Development: El Salvador is actively pursuing economic development, implementing policies to attract foreign investment and create jobs.
Cultural Diplomacy: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been promoting cultural diplomacy through initiatives like "El Salvador Renace," showcasing the nation's art, music, literature, and traditions.

Looking Ahead

To further advance in the Global Soft Power Index, El Salvador will continue to focus on:

Promoting tourism and culture
Enhancing digital infrastructure
Improving international trade relations
Fostering cooperation on global issues such as sustainability and innovation

"It is essential to continue expanding the country's international presence through participation in multilateral forums and the establishment of new strategic alliances, which will contribute to an even more positive projection of the country in soft power indices in the future," Minister Hill noted.

El salvador's new focus on tourism has led to it being featured in many international travel publications. Also by focusing on cultural diplomacy, they have been able to change the global narrative of what El Salvador is as a country.
