Danyang County, South Korea, Tops Tourism Index Despite Population Decline

Danyang, South Korea – A small county in South Korea's North Chungcheong Province has defied expectations by securing the top spot in a nationwide tourism development index. Danyang County, with a population of just 28,000, was the only county among those at risk of depopulation to achieve a Grade 1 rating in the 2023 Regional Tourism Development Index, as announced by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Culture and Tourism Institute.

The index assesses the tourism development levels of 17 South Korean provinces and 151 cities and counties based on 43 indicators, including tourist reception capacity, tourism consumption power, and tourism policy capabilities. While metropolitan cities like Seoul and Jeju consistently rank high, Danyang managed to stand out among smaller, rural counties.

Danyang's success can be attributed to several factors, including a significant increase in tourist numbers and spending, as well as investments in tourism infrastructure. The county has also been proactive in promoting itself as a digital-first tourist destination, with a digital resident certificate penetration rate that is 6.4 times the national average.

A Beacon for Rural Tourism

Danyang's achievement is particularly notable given its status as a county at risk of depopulation. This designation is given to regions experiencing a significant decline in population due to factors such as aging, outmigration, and low birth rates. By successfully attracting tourists and boosting its local economy, Danyang has demonstrated that even small, rural communities can thrive in the tourism industry.

“Danyang has been making significant strides in various tourism sectors, including ranking first nationally in the penetration rate of digital resident certificates, sixth in the ratio of living population, and eighth in summer vacation travel satisfaction,” said a Danyang County official. "We will continue to solidify our position as the number one inland tourism destination and work to become an even more attractive tourist spot."

Factors Contributing to Danyang's Success

Digital Transformation: Danyang has embraced digital technologies to enhance the tourist experience. The county's digital resident certificate program has made it easier for visitors to access local services and attractions.
Focus on Nature and Adventure: Danyang's stunning natural scenery and abundant outdoor activities, such as hiking, biking, and water sports, have made it a popular destination for nature lovers.
Investment in Infrastructure: The county has invested in improving its tourism infrastructure, including building new accommodations, trails, and visitor centers.
Effective Tourism Marketing: Danyang has successfully marketed itself as a unique and attractive destination through various channels, including social media and online travel platforms.

Implications for Other Regions

Danyang's success offers valuable lessons for other rural communities facing similar challenges. By focusing on niche tourism markets, investing in digital technologies, and promoting sustainable development, these regions can attract visitors and revitalize their local economies.
