Hur Woo-ryeong, a KBS news anchor and popular YouTuber with 170,000 subscribers, shared her experience in a video posted on her YouTube channel on January 13th. In the video, Hur described how she was turned away from a Daiso store while visiting [City] with her guide dog, Hwayani.

Despite the clear legal protections for guide dogs in South Korea, a store employee refused to allow Hur and Hwayani to enter, citing safety concerns. When Hur questioned the employee about the safety concerns, the employee expressed worries about other customers potentially tripping over the dog.

However, under South Korean law, guide dogs are permitted to enter virtually all public places, including transportation, public facilities, accommodations, and food establishments. Penalties for businesses that deny entry to guide dogs can include fines of up to 3 million won.

Hur's experience has ignited a heated debate on social media, with many expressing outrage at the store employee's actions. Critics argue that the incident highlights a lack of awareness and understanding of the rights of people with disabilities in South Korea.

Advocates for people with disabilities have called for stricter enforcement of existing laws and increased public education on the role of guide dogs. They argue that such incidents not only violate the rights of individuals with disabilities but also create a barrier to their full participation in society.

Daiso, the store chain involved in the incident, has yet to issue a public statement.
