Seoul, South Korea – Gyeonggi-do province has announced a significant investment of 526.5 billion won to bolster infrastructure and public services in its northern region, as it moves closer to establishing a special self-governing province.

As part of the ‘Gyeonggibukbu Grand Transformation Project,’ the provincial government will allocate funds to four key areas: expanding living infrastructure, relocating public institutions, improving transportation infrastructure, and attracting investment and easing regulations.

Healthcare and Transportation Upgrades A notable highlight of the investment is the construction of innovative public hospitals in Namyangju and Yangju cities. These facilities will be equipped to handle infectious diseases, provide emergency medical services, and offer comprehensive healthcare and caregiving services.

To enhance transportation connectivity, Gyeonggi-do is accelerating plans for high-speed rail expansion in the northern region. Feasibility studies for an Uijeongbu-bound SRT service and a Paju-bound KTX are underway. Additionally, the province will invest in upgrading 25 local roads and construct new highways to reduce traffic congestion and improve commuting times.

Other Initiatives The province is also committed to developing a pet-friendly theme park in Dongducheon, creating a complex cultural space for pet owners. To attract investment, Gyeonggi-do is actively seeking foreign investors and streamlining regulations in designated special economic zones.

Relocation of Public Institutions As part of the decentralization efforts, several public institutions will be relocated to the northern region. The Gyeonggi Research Institute, Gyeonggi Economic Science Promotion Institute, and Gyeonggi Credit Guarantee Foundation will move to Uijeongbu, Paju, and Namyangju, respectively.

Looking Ahead The substantial investment in the northern region is expected to stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and improve the quality of life for residents. By addressing longstanding infrastructure gaps and providing new amenities, Gyeonggi-do aims to transform the region into a more vibrant and attractive destination for both businesses and residents.
