Gyeongju’s Hwangnam Geumgo Transforms Bank into Unique Culinary Vault

GYEONGJU — A new Italian restaurant is drawing attention in Gyeongju for its unique fusion of history and modern dining. Located in the bustling Hwangnidan-gil area, Hwangnam Geumgo (meaning 'Hwangnam Vault') has artfully repurposed a former bank building, preserving elements of its past to create a distinctive atmosphere.

The restaurant’s name and defining aesthetic are inspired by its origins. Rather than tearing down the structure's original features, the owners chose to incorporate them into the interior design. A preserved portion of the old vault, complete with its formidable metal door, now serves as a striking centerpiece, lending an antique and sophisticated charm to the space. The dining area is furnished with classic, ornate tables and chairs, complementing the building’s heritage while offering a cozy and stylish setting for patrons.

Hwangnam Geumgo has quickly gained a reputation for its creative Italian menu, particularly its pasta dishes. Signature offerings include the Spicy Chadol Cream Pasta, which blends creamy Italian sauce with a distinctly Korean spicy kick and thinly sliced beef, and the Shanghai Cream and Oil Pastas, which draw inspiration from Asian flavors. The menu also features traditional Italian fare like various pizzas and calzones.

To maintain its serene, vintage ambiance, the restaurant operates as a "no-kids zone" for children under ten, a policy that allows diners to enjoy a quiet meal without interruption. This, combined with its prime location and distinctive decor, positions Hwangnam Geumgo as a must-visit destination for those seeking a memorable and tasteful dining experience in Gyeongju's historic heart.
