CHUNCHEON — Gangwon State successfully wrapped up the 2026 Gangwon Music Festival, a two-day celebration of youth and music held at Uiam Park in Chuncheon from October 30 to 31.

The festival served as a vibrant showcase for 30 promising young musicians from the region, offering them a prominent platform to showcase their talent while boosting local tourism and breathing new life into the downtown area.

From Dialogue to the Stage

The event directly materialized feedback from a listening session held last September, where Governor Woo Sang-ho met with local young musicians to discuss critical needs like expanded performance opportunities and creative support.

The response was overwhelming: 79 teams applied through an open call. Following an online audition, 30 elite acts were selected to perform across a diverse array of musical genres.

Highlights and Crowd Favorites

Alongside the rising indie acts, the festival featured high-profile celebratory performances by renowned South Korean vocalists Kim Ki-tae and Cheetah. Attendees also enjoyed a variety of engaging side events, including interactive audience programs and a line-up of local food trucks, creating a festive autumn atmosphere for residents and tourists alike.

Looking Ahead to 2027

Building on this year's momentum, Gangwon State announced ambitious plans for next year. The region will host the "2027 Gangwon Youth Culture Festival (WAVE ON Gangwon)," which aims to blend K-pop concerts, indie youth stages, and coastal cultural contents. The upcoming initiative is designed to attract young travelers from across the nation, showcasing Gangwon’s unique appeal and driving long-term tourism growth.

"This festival is deeply meaningful because the voices of our youth directly shaped a real stage," said Gangwon State Governor Woo Sang-ho. "We will continue to support young artists in realizing their dreams while leveraging youth culture to revitalize our local economy and tourism."
