Gimpo Elementary School Fosters Love of Reading with Innovative 'Reading Moms' Program

GIMPO, SOUTH KOREA – Gimpo Elementary School, under the leadership of Principal Choi Jae-sook, has launched an engaging initiative titled ‘Reading Moms’ to cultivate a passion for reading among its youngest learners. The program, held every Friday morning from 8:30 to 8:50, offers a dedicated reading session for enthusiastic first and second-grade students who arrive at school before the start of classes.

The ‘Reading Moms’ program is a year-long special educational activity designed to make reading a fun and enriching experience for early elementary students. For the first semester, the program will thoughtfully curate picture books aligned with monthly themes, creating a relevant and engaging reading experience. The curriculum includes selections focused on the new school year in April, celebrations of Family Month in May, and reflections on Patriot and Veterans Month in June. Following the reading sessions, supplementary activities will be incorporated to deepen comprehension and engagement with the stories.

This innovative program is the result of a collaborative effort between the school and the parent-teacher association, driven by a shared commitment to instill a lifelong love of reading in students. By providing opportunities for indirect learning through the narratives and characters in books, the ‘Reading Moms’ program aims to broaden the students' perspectives and establish strong reading habits from an early age.

A participating parent from the school's library association expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, "We carefully select a diverse range of books that are not only age-appropriate and aligned with the curriculum but also offer students a window to experiences and ideas beyond the traditional classroom setting. Our hope is to spark their curiosity and encourage them to explore the world through literature."

Principal Choi Jae-sook emphasized the positive impact of parental involvement in education, remarking, "This voluntary reading program led by our dedicated parents is invaluable. We believe that by experiencing the joy of reading in a warm and supportive environment, our young students will not only develop essential literacy skills but also nurture their emotional intelligence and foster creativity. This initiative is a testament to the strong partnership between our school and our parent community in supporting the holistic development of our students."

The ‘Reading Moms’ program at Gimpo Elementary School stands as a commendable example of how schools and parents can work together to create enriching educational experiences that go beyond the regular curriculum, fostering a culture of literacy and a lifelong love of books in young children.
