Asunción, Paraguay – On March 14th, a campaign aimed at raising awareness about the detrimental effects of chronic diseases on kidney health was conducted at the Asunción Bus Terminal. The event, organized by the National Institute of Nephrology under the Paraguayan Ministry of Public Health, featured a healthy breakfast, distribution of informational booklets, and various health-focused activities.
The campaign coincided with World Kidney Day, observed annually on the second Thursday of March. Since 2006, the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and the Kidney Foundation (NKF) have encouraged global observance of this day through campaigns emphasizing the importance of kidney health.
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a prevalent and harmful condition affecting an estimated one in ten adults worldwide. If left untreated, CKD can be life-threatening. Early detection is crucial for effective management and treatment, reducing morbidity and mortality while improving cost-effectiveness and sustainability. However, statistics indicate a concerning rise in CKD-related deaths, projected to become the fifth leading cause of death by 2040.
Participants at the Asunción event had the opportunity to complete a questionnaire from the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) designed to assess diabetes risk. The campaign also included lectures on CKD prevention and management, blood pressure checks, and concluded with an exercise session.
Lifestyle Habits for CKD Prevention

Engage in regular exercise: Aim for at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise three times per week. Maintain a healthy weight.
