K-Platform Power: Olive Young and Musinsa to Spearhead Global Expansion for SMEs

SEOUL — South Korea is accelerating its "K-Export" momentum by leveraging the global reach of its dominant retail platforms. On April 13, 2026, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) and the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) held a joint strategic meeting at KOTRA’s headquarters in Seoul to launch a major initiative aimed at expanding the global footprint of K-consumer goods.

The government signed a strategic cooperation agreement with 13 leading retail and e-commerce companies to establish a "SME Export Highway." The selected participants include offline and integrated retail giants such as CJ Olive Young, Musinsa, E-mart, and Shinsegae Department Store, as well as specialized cross-border e-commerce platforms like Kurly, KTown4u, and Delivered Korea.

Bridging the Gap for Small Enterprises
While K-beauty, fashion, and food exports have surpassed the historic $10 billion annual mark, many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) still struggle with the high barriers to entry. Lack of international logistics networks, insufficient marketing expertise, and the heavy financial burden of initial investments often stifle global ambitions.

By supporting these major retail platforms to settle in overseas markets, the government intends to create a "win-win" ecosystem. These platforms will serve as the primary gateway, introducing high-quality SME products to global consumers under a trusted retail umbrella.

Comprehensive Support Infrastructure
To ensure the success of this initiative, MOTIE and KOTRA will establish a dedicated matching fund. The support program is designed to be meticulous, covering every stage of the export process:

Strategic Consulting: Tailored advice for entering specific regional markets.
Local Marketing: Integration with major "Hallyu" (Korean Wave) expos and promotional events.
Product Development: Support for Private Brand (PB) development and localized branding.
Legal & Logistics: Assistance in obtaining local certifications, protecting intellectual property (IP), and providing international shipping solutions.

A New Era for K-Consumer Goods
"Many K-beauty brands possess incredible potential but are held back by the operational risks of going abroad alone," said an official from CJ Olive Young. "This infrastructure support from KOTRA and the Ministry will act as a vital catalyst in widening the export path for K-consumer goods."

Kang Kyung-sung, CEO of KOTRA, emphasized the timing of this move. "With global demand for K-consumer goods at an all-time high, this is the optimal moment to leap forward by exporting our retail networks themselves," Kang stated. "We will provide our full support to ensure that the co-prosperity model—where Korean distribution channels and SMEs grow together globally—becomes a permanent fixture in the international market."

As the "K-Beauty Expo Korea 2025" recently kicked off at KINTEX, showcasing a surge in foreign interest, this new government-led alliance marks a strategic shift from individual product exports to a systematic, platform-driven global expansion.
