Mokpo-si, Jeollanam-do, South Korea - Marta (39, Orlando Pride), the undisputed living legend of Brazilian women's football, is set to make a dramatic return to the national team after a nine-month hiatus following her retirement announcement. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) revealed the squad list for two upcoming friendly matches against Japan in late May and early June, including the name of the iconic forward.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest female footballers of all time, Marta has earned the glorious moniker "Skirt-Wearing Pelé" for her exceptional skill and prolific goal-scoring ability. Her unparalleled achievements include a record six FIFA Women's World Player of the Year awards (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2018), six FIFA Women's World Cup appearances, and a record 17 goals in the tournament. Furthermore, she holds the record for the most goals scored for the Brazilian women's national team with 119 goals in 204 appearances.

Despite her glittering career, an Olympic gold medal has eluded Marta. At her sixth Olympic Games in Paris last August, Brazil suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to arch-rivals the United States in the final. Immediately after the match, Marta tearfully announced her retirement from the national team, a moment that resonated deeply with football fans worldwide, seemingly marking the end of an era for Brazilian women's football.

However, as the Brazilian women's national team intensifies its preparations for the 2025 Copa América Femenina, scheduled to kick off in July, they have reached out to the legendary Marta once again. Brazil's head coach, Arthur Elias, officially announced Marta's return during a press conference on May 14th, revealing the squad for the two friendlies against Japan, to be held in São Paulo, Brazil, on May 30th and June 2nd.

Coach Elias stated, "I recently had sincere conversations with Marta, and she expressed a strong desire to contribute to the national team once more." He further emphasized the positive impact of having an experienced and talented player like Marta, noting, "The presence of a player like Marta, with her vast experience, will also have a positive influence on the development of younger players," highlighting the anticipated synergy her leadership and experience will bring to the team.

Marta's return transcends the mere comeback of a single player. While Brazilian women's football has been undergoing a generational shift, nurturing new talents in recent years, a lack of experience on the international stage has often been a point of concern. In this context, Marta's inclusion, with her wealth of experience and exceptional skills, promises not only to elevate the team's performance but also to provide invaluable guidance and know-how to the younger generation of players.

The Copa América Femenina holds particular significance for the Brazilian national team. Success in this tournament, which crowns the champions of South America, is crucial for boosting team morale and strengthening their competitiveness in future international competitions. Marta's return is expected to inject renewed energy into the Brazilian squad and reignite their aspirations for Copa América glory.

While some speculate that Marta, given her age, may not replicate the explosive performances of her past, her exceptional football intelligence, seasoned game management, and unwavering dedication to the team remain significant assets for Brazil. Moreover, her mere presence on the field can exert considerable pressure on opponents and serve as a vital source of inspiration and leadership within the team.

With Marta's return, Brazilian women's football fans can once again look forward to witnessing the magic of the "Queen." The football world will be watching with keen interest to see how she performs at the Copa América and whether she can lead her team to long-awaited international success. The comeback of the "Skirt-Wearing Pelé" signals the dawn of a new chapter for Brazilian women's football.
