SEOUL — In a historic milestone for Korean cinema, legendary filmmaker Park Chan-wook has been appointed as the Jury President for the 79th Cannes Film Festival. This marks the first time a South Korean national will lead the prestigious jury, further solidifying the country’s formidable influence on the global cinematic stage.

According to reports from major news outlets including AP and AFP on February 25 (local time), the festival organizers have selected the visionary director of Oldboy and Decision to Leave to preside over the competition category. Park becomes only the second Asian director to hold this position, following Hong Kong auteur Wong Kar-wai in 2006.

The Rise of 'Cannes Park'
The nickname "Cannes Park" is not merely a title but a testament to a decades-long love affair between the filmmaker and the French Riviera. Park’s journey at Cannes has been defined by three major competitive trophies:

2004 Grand Prix: Oldboy The ultra-violent yet deeply poetic masterpiece introduced Park to the world. By securing the Grand Prix (the festival's runner-up prize), Oldboy became the first Korean film to win a major award at a top-tier international festival.
2009 Jury Prize: Thirst Park returned with a subversive take on the vampire genre. When asked if he felt disappointed not winning the Palme d'Or, Park famously quipped: "A vampire cannot drink all the blood they desire. Being part of the winning group is joy enough."
2022 Best Director: Decision to Leave After a brief hiatus from the winner's circle with The Handmaiden (which won the technical Vulcan Award for Production Design), Park returned with a sophisticated romantic noir that earned him the Best Director prize.

A Historic Shift in Leadership
Park’s appointment follows last year’s Jury President, the world-renowned French actress Juliette Binoche. While Park previously served as a jury member in 2017, his elevation to President reflects a profound recognition of his artistic career and the collective strength of Korean cinema.

"This appointment is a comprehensive evaluation of Director Park’s entire body of work," says film critic Jung Ji-wook. "After a year where Korean films were notably absent from the main competition, this achievement is as significant as winning a physical trophy. It signifies that a Korean creator is now leading the delicate process of evaluating world cinema."

Key Milestones: Koreans at the Cannes Jury
Park Chan-wook joins an elite group of Korean figures who have influenced the Cannes jury process over the years:

Shin Sang-ok (1994)
Lee Chang-dong (2009)
Jeon Do-yeon (2014)
Song Kang-ho (2021)
Hong Sang-soo (2025)

What to Expect for the 79th Festival
As Jury President, Park Chan-wook will steer the deliberations for the Palme d'Or, the festival's highest honor. Known for his meticulous attention to detail, psychological depth, and visual panache, Park is expected to bring a discerning and unique perspective to the 2026 selection.

His leadership is seen not just as a personal triumph, but as a symbolic "passing of the torch" to a generation of Korean filmmakers who have transformed the medium from a local industry into a global powerhouse.
