Incheon Airport DF1 and DF2 Zones Find New Owners; Lotte Declares the ‘Return of the King’ After Three Years; Hyundai Emerges as a Sole All-Category Operator Aiming for the ‘1 Trillion Won Annual Revenue Club.’

INCHEON, South Korea — The landscape of the duty-free industry at Incheon International Airport, the primary gateway to South Korea, has undergone a complete transformation. As established operators who have held the fort for years step back, the industry titan Lotte Duty Free has made a spectacular comeback, while the rising power, Hyundai Duty Free, has aggressively expanded its territory. This reshuffle signals the start of the most intense ranking competition the industry has ever seen.

The Customs Service’s Verdict: Lotte Takes DF1, Hyundai Secures DF2
On the 26th, the Customs Special License Committee of the Korea Customs Service announced the results of the new patent review for the duty-free concessions in the Incheon International Airport departure area. The focal point of this review was the DF1 and DF2 zones, which cover high-demand items including liquor, tobacco, perfume, and cosmetics.

DF1 Zone: Awarded to Lotte Duty Free.
DF2 Zone: Awarded to Hyundai Duty Free.
This outcome was a matter of extreme tension for the entire industry, as these spots were vacated by major players Hotel Shilla (Shilla Duty Free) and Shinsegae Duty Free. The decision effectively determines who will hold the initiative in the duty-free market for the coming years.

Lotte Duty Free: Reclaiming Pride After a Three-Year Hiatus
For Lotte Duty Free, this win represents much more than just acquiring a business license. In 2023, Lotte left the airport after failing to reach an agreement on rent calculation methods for Terminal 2. After a three-year absence, Lotte has finally achieved its long-cherished goal of "re-entering Incheon Airport."

Lotte forecasts that securing the DF1 zone will result in an annual revenue increase of at least 600 billion KRW.

"In a situation where downtown duty-free sales are stagnating, airport duty-free shops serve as a critical hub for maintaining brand awareness and buying power," noted an industry insider. "Lotte’s return will further solidify its position as the number one operator."
Lotte plans to focus on optimizing customer flow and curating "MD (Merchandise) compositions" that reflect the latest global trends through sequential renovations.

Hyundai’s Aggressive Leap: Eyes on the Top Spot
The other protagonist of this review is Hyundai Duty Free. By adding DF2 (Liquor/Tobacco/Perfumes/Cosmetics) to its existing portfolio of DF5 (Luxury Boutique) and DF7 (Fashion/Sundries), Hyundai has earned the prestigious title of being the only duty-free operator at Incheon Airport to handle all product categories.

Hyundai Duty Free presented a concrete blueprint to achieve an annual revenue of 1.1 trillion KRW through this aggressive expansion. This is interpreted as a bold declaration of intent to break the long-standing "Big 3" hierarchy (Lotte, Shilla, Shinsegae) and ascend to the industry's top spot. The synergy between the Hyundai Department Store Group’s retail prowess and the duty-free arm's growth is expected to pose a significant threat to traditional leaders.

Market Outlook: Accelerated Service Competition and Restructuring
With the selection of new operators, the scenery of Incheon Airport’s duty-free zone is set to change dramatically. Both Lotte and Hyundai are prioritizing "experiential spaces" and "digital transformation" as their core strategies. Moving beyond simple sales, the airport will see the rise of "showroom-style" stores designed to introduce Korean culture and brands to both domestic and international tourists.

Remaining Challenges:
Despite the excitement, hurdles remain:

Economic Headwinds: Global economic slowdowns and high exchange rates persist.
Rent Pressure: Operators must secure profitability while managing the high rent costs associated with airport concessions.
Efficiency: Real profit will depend on the ability to attract exclusive brands and maintain high operational efficiency.

Conclusion: A New Era of Competition
With Lotte’s return and Hyundai’s rapid ascent, the 2026 duty-free market is poised to become a battlefield for a "true showdown." For consumers, this shift promises a wider variety of brands and significantly enhanced services. As these giants prepare their new storefronts, all eyes are on Incheon to see who will ultimately dominate the skies of global travel retail.
