Seoul, South Korea - The Korean government's decision to maintain financial support for subspecialty training in trauma surgery is expected to resolve the potential shutdown of the severe trauma training center at Korea University Guro Hospital.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced on March 21st that it will be accepting applications for subspecialty training in trauma surgery from March 24th to April 4th. This initiative aims to cultivate specialized personnel dedicated to treating severe trauma patients.
Despite initial budget concerns, the government has secured 868 million won through adjustments to the Emergency Medical Fund Operating Plan, ensuring the program's continuation.
The support package includes 88 million won annually for trainee salaries and 36 million won for educational expenses, totaling 124 million won per individual. Educational expenses cover the full cost of program participation, including academic society registration fees and overseas training accommodations and travel. The support period extends for a maximum of two years, on a one-year basis.
Upon completion of training and acquisition of subspecialty certification, trainees are obligated to work at a regional trauma center or trauma training institution for the duration of the government-funded support period. This year, the number of supported trauma surgery trainees has been increased from five to seven.
The list of eligible training hospitals has been expanded to include 12 regional trauma centers, in addition to the existing Korea University Guro Hospital, Wonju Severance Christian Hospital, Gachon University Gil Medical Center, Ajou University Hospital, and Uijeongbu St. Mary's Hospital.
The newly added hospitals are:
Kyungpook National University Hospital
Gyeongsang National University Hospital
Dankook University Hospital
Pusan National University Hospital
Andong Hospital
Ulsan University Hospital
Eulji University Hospital
Chonnam National University Hospital
Chungbuk National University Hospital
National Medical Center
Wonkwang University Hospital
Jeju Halla General Hospital
Furthermore, the eligible medical specialties have been broadened from surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, orthopedic surgery, and neurosurgery to include emergency medicine and anesthesiology and pain medicine, bringing the total to six.
Korea University Guro Hospital's severe trauma training center, established in 2014 as a designated hospital for intensive trauma specialist training, faced the threat of closure due to the discontinuation of government funding.
A government official stated, "We will continue to provide an environment where high-quality training can be received by treating various trauma patients in medical institutions equipped with dedicated trauma intensive care beds."
The official added, "To address the shortage of specialized personnel in the field of severe trauma, we urge the active participation of dedicated physicians."
