Bucheon Wonmi Police Station Installs "CCTV Recording Warning" Wobblers to Prevent Unmanned Store Theft

Bucheon Wonmi Police Station in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 6th that it has proactively responded to the recent surge in theft targeting unmanned stores by producing and distributing its own "CCTV in Operation" wobblers (swinging advertisements) to 165 unmanned stores in the area. This is an emergency measure taken in response to the continuous occurrence of petty theft targeting unmanned stores, and the police expect it to deter criminal psychology and increase prevention effectiveness.

Wonmi Police Station is making multifaceted efforts to prevent unmanned store theft during the special crime prevention activity period (April 28th to June 8th) to ensure the peaceful daily lives of residents in the spring. The installation of these wobblers is part of these prevention activities, and the police focused on maximizing the crime prevention effect by going beyond simply posting warning signs to utilizing visual impact.

The newly produced wobblers clearly state "CCTV in Operation" along with specific legal clauses and penalties: "Petty crimes are also subject to criminal punishment," and "Article 329 of the Criminal Act: Theft, imprisonment for up to 6 years or a fine of up to 10 million won." This aims to not only inform customers that CCTV is recording but also to strongly warn potential criminals by clearly stating that even minor theft can result in severe legal penalties.

Wonmi Police Station expects that attaching the produced wobblers in locations easily visible to customers entering unmanned stores will clearly make them aware of the CCTV surveillance and effectively raise their awareness of crime. The swinging motion of the wobblers is expected to further focus attention and have a psychological deterrent effect, making potential criminals think twice before attempting a crime.

Choi Bo-hyun, head of the Wonmi Police Station, emphasized, "Even small amounts of theft are clear crimes, and as the operation of unmanned stores increases due to the spread of non-face-to-face consumption trends, the number of theft cases is also increasing, making prevention activities even more important." He added, "We will continue to continuously inspect and improve various crime-vulnerable factors to do our best to create a safe Bucheon where residents can live with peace of mind."

In recent years, the number of unmanned stores has rapidly increased nationwide due to the spread of non-face-to-face consumption culture, and accordingly, theft crimes targeting unmanned stores have also been steadily occurring. In particular, incidents of stealing small amounts of cash or goods during nighttime hours or when managers are absent have frequently occurred, increasing the anxiety of unmanned store operators.

According to crime statistics from the National Police Agency, the number of unmanned store theft cases has been on the rise every year, and perpetrators mainly target cash registers or displayed goods. These crimes not only cause direct financial damage to store operators but also create anxiety and distrust in unmanned systems.

In response, local police stations are devising and implementing various measures to prevent unmanned store theft. The installation of wobblers by the Bucheon Wonmi Police Station is part of these efforts and is noteworthy for its potential to achieve high crime prevention effects at a relatively low cost.

Experts emphasize that preventing unmanned store theft requires not only police efforts but also the store operators' own efforts to strengthen security. Along with strengthening their own security systems, such as installing and checking the operation of high-definition CCTV, reinforcing door and window locks, and establishing emergency contact networks, they also need to take an active stance in immediately reporting any suspicious situations to the police.

It remains to be seen whether the Bucheon Wonmi Police Station's installation of "CCTV Recording Warning" wobblers will have a substantial effect on preventing unmanned store theft in the area. It is expected that a safer unmanned store operating environment can be created when the proactive prevention activities of the police are combined with the voluntary security enhancement efforts of unmanned store operators.
