Nonghyup Expands ESG Circular Economy Initiatives Through Employee E-Waste Donation Campaign

SEOUL, South Korea – Nonghyup, one of South Korea's largest agricultural cooperatives, announced today the successful launch of its "Beom Nonghyup ESG, Value-Added Modu Bium" campaign, a significant step in its ongoing commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) management. The initiative, which encourages employees to donate their used electronic appliances for recycling, underscores Nonghyup's dedication to fostering a circular economy and fulfilling its corporate social responsibility.

The kick-off event, held at Nonghyup Central Headquarters in Seoul on June 18, saw active participation from executives and employees, including Nonghyup Central Vice Chairman Ji Jun-seop, who personally contributed to the e-waste collection. This campaign is a collaborative effort between Nonghyup Central and E-循環거버넌스 (E-Circular Governance), a public interest corporation authorized by the Ministry of Environment, specializing in the responsible management of e-waste.

The collected electronic products are transported to E-Circular Governance's resource recycling centers. Here, they undergo a sophisticated process of breakdown and material recovery, transforming discarded items into valuable raw materials. These re-resourced materials are then channeled back into industrial production, effectively closing the loop and minimizing the demand for virgin resources. Nonghyup emphasizes that the campaign's ambition extends beyond mere waste reduction; it aims to establish a robust resource virtuous cycle and contribute tangibly to societal well-being.

To amplify awareness of environmental issues, the event featured a special promotional performance. Kim Kyung-ho Band, a renowned rock band and ambassador for E-Circular Governance, along with comedian Yoon Jeong-soo, captivated the audience with a performance centered on climate change and resource circulation. The engaging program also included a prize draw for participating employees, further encouraging their involvement in environmental protection.

Building on the success of this initial event, Nonghyup plans to significantly expand the "ESG Sharing Modu Bium Program." This ambitious expansion will encompass all 1,111 Nonghyup and Chukhyeop (livestock cooperatives) branches nationwide, as well as all affiliated companies. The program will actively collect discarded electrical and electronic products not only from employees' workplaces but also from their homes, transforming individual efforts into a collective, widespread environmental impact.

Nonghyup has a well-established history of engaging in ESG-driven social contribution activities. These initiatives have ranged from creating urban apiaries to promote biodiversity and support local ecosystems to extensive rural environmental clean-up efforts. More recently, as part of its urban ecological restoration efforts, Nonghyup established an apiary in a disused space near its Seodaemun headquarters in Seoul, highlighting its commitment to biodiversity and urban greening. These diverse activities demonstrate Nonghyup's holistic approach to ESG, integrating environmental stewardship with community engagement.

Ji Jun-seop, Vice Chairman of Nonghyup Central, expressed his appreciation for the enthusiastic participation of the employees. "This donation campaign is made even more meaningful by the voluntary participation of our employees," he stated. "Moving forward, Nonghyup will continue to actively pursue ESG practices for environmental protection and a sustainable society."

This campaign represents a crucial step for Nonghyup in its broader ESG strategy. By promoting the responsible disposal and recycling of electronic waste, Nonghyup is directly addressing the growing global challenge of e-waste management, which contributes to landfill overflow and the depletion of valuable resources. The initiative aligns with international best practices for corporate sustainability, emphasizing the importance of extended producer responsibility and consumer participation in circular economy models. Furthermore, by engaging its extensive network of cooperatives and employees, Nonghyup is fostering a culture of environmental consciousness that extends beyond its corporate boundaries, potentially influencing millions of individuals across South Korea. This comprehensive approach to e-waste management positions Nonghyup as a leader in corporate environmental stewardship within the agricultural and financial sectors.
