International Crane Foundation to Visit Suncheon Bay, a World-Renowned Black-Crowned Night-Crane Wintering Ground

Suncheon City announced that 37 board members of the International Crane Foundation will visit Suncheon Bay on the 26th to observe the conservation efforts of the black-crowned night-crane habitat.

Established in 1973, the International Crane Foundation is an international non-governmental organization with headquarters in Wisconsin, USA. It consists of a global network of experts from over 50 countries, dedicated to protecting the world's 15 crane species.

While the foundation's board meetings have traditionally been held in the United States, this year, to commemorate its 50th anniversary, the board will visit Suncheon Bay, renowned as a world-class wintering ground for black-crowned night-cranes. This decision is a testament to Suncheon Bay's status as a global model for conservation, given the steady increase in its black-crowned night-crane population amidst the worldwide decline of crane habitats.

Board members will begin their visit with an early morning observation of the cranes' roosting site. Afterward, they will hear a briefing from Mayor Noh Kwan-gyu, who has led Suncheon Bay's restoration and the development of an eco-based city since 2006. The visitors will also have a firsthand experience of the city's eco-centric urban strategy, which connects the urban area, the national garden, Dongcheon estuary, and Suncheon Bay. The goal is to share Suncheon Bay's success story with the world.

Mayor Noh Kwan-gyu remarked, "For the past two decades, Suncheon has been a city committed to discovering and implementing ecological policies that foster coexistence between humans and pristine nature. Through this visit, the world will be able to see how Suncheon's ecological philosophy has been integrated into a circular economy."
