Jeju Island plans to expand its 'Car-Free Street Walking' event, which was piloted last year. The decision was made at the first meeting of the 'Pan-Citizen Walking Promotion Council' held at the Halla Hall of the provincial government on the 27th. The council aims to diversify event locations and increase citizen participation to achieve the triple goals of promoting health, carbon neutrality, and revitalizing the local economy.

Participants emphasized that the 'Car-Free Street Walking' event should not be a one-time event but play a crucial role in systematically establishing a walking culture in the province. To this end, various measures to expand the participation of citizens and tourists were discussed.

Key Discussion Points

Diversification of Event Locations: Holding events in various regions to enable more citizens to participate.
Promoting Daily Walking Exercise: Launching various campaigns to encourage walking exercise in daily life.
Citizen Participation Campaigns: Operating various promotional and participation programs to induce active participation from citizens.
Creating a Walking-Friendly Environment: Improving related facilities to create a safe and pleasant walking environment.
Linking with Local Businesses: Connecting with local businesses to ensure that the walking event contributes to revitalizing the local economy.
Utilizing Online Platforms: Actively promoting the event using various media and online platforms.
Program Composition Considering Participant Flow: Organizing programs with consideration for the convenience of participants.
Jeju Governor Oh Young-hun stated, "The experience of over 10,000 citizens and tourists becoming the owners of the streets at last year's 'Car-Free Street Walking' event was surprising to everyone. The contemplation on expanding this year's event and sharing its significance will be an important process in achieving the Jeju provincial government's goals for carbon neutrality and a sustainable society." He also requested, "As we plan to hold the event three times this year, please gather the wisdom of the committee members to ensure that the event is more mature than last year's."
