Singapore – The Singapore National Stadium is poised to become the epicenter of international rugby sevens as it hosts the thrilling conclusion to the HSBC SVNS 2025 regular season on April 5th and 6th. The coveted HSBC SVNS 2025 League Winners trophies will be awarded at the culmination of this sixth and final round, promising a weekend of high-stakes competition and electrifying action.
Following a fiercely contested penultimate round in Hong Kong China, all twelve men's and women's teams have converged in Singapore, eager to secure crucial ranking points. The top eight ranked teams in both the men's and women's standings at the end of the Singapore tournament will earn their place in the prestigious HSBC SVNS World Championship, set to take place in Los Angeles on May 3rd and 4th. Teams finishing ninth through twelfth will face a final opportunity to qualify through the SVNS Play Off, also held in Los Angeles.
The anticipation is palpable, with the twenty-four team captains recently enjoying a scenic boat tour around Singapore's iconic Marina Bay, setting the stage for the intense battles to come.
Pools and Fixtures Promise Thrilling Encounters
The pool draws for the HSBC SVNS Singapore have created compelling matchups, utilizing a format of four pools of three teams each, similar to the successful event in Cape Town. This structure ensures that every single match carries significant weight from the opening whistle.
In the women's competition, Pool A sees Olympic champions and current SVNS leaders New Zealand pitted against Brazil and China. Reigning SVNS champions Australia will face Japan and Spain in Pool B. Pool C features a tantalizing clash between Olympic medallists Canada and the USA, alongside Great Britain. Finally, Pool D comprises France, Fiji, and Ireland.
Sarah Hirini, the captain of the New Zealand women's team, expressed her team's focus: "We had some really good success in Hong Kong, and we want to continue that momentum here. The girls won here last year, and I hope we can repeat that success this year too." She added, "It's amazing that we have put ourselves in a good place to hopefully have a successful day one, which would see us bring the league title home as we did last year, so we're really excited by that. It's something we'll focus on and enjoy if that comes to fruition, but Brazil and China are tough, and we need to rectify a few things from when we played them last weekend."
The men's pools are equally captivating. Pool A features current SVNS title favorites Argentina alongside Great Britain and South Africa. Olympic champions France will battle Ireland and Kenya in Pool B. Australia, Spain, and Uruguay will compete in Pool C. Lastly, Pool D sets up a fierce contest between Fiji, New Zealand, and the USA.
Argentina's captain, Santiago Mare, conveyed his team's determined mindset: "Confidence is high after winning the last two tournaments, but we are still looking forward to growing in Singapore, to doing things even better on the field and then get the results." Regarding the prospect of becoming league winners, he stated, "It gives us a lot of motivation. It is the objective, and we are working a lot, just focusing on our game play and our actions, not in the result. Every pool is very hard, and every match is like a final, so we have to be very clinical and play very well in the first two matches. It would mean a lot to become league winners, so we are focusing on that."
Title Races Reach Boiling Point
New Zealand's women and Argentina's men currently lead the HSBC SVNS standings after five rounds, both having secured consecutive victories in Vancouver and Hong Kong.
The New Zealand women hold an eight-point advantage over their closest rivals, Australia. They are in a strong position to claim the SVNS league title if they top their pool in Singapore and secure a top-four finish.
Meanwhile, the Argentine men lead by a significant twelve points over double Olympic champions Fiji and fourteen points ahead of third-placed Spain, who have enjoyed a remarkable season thus far. Argentina will guarantee winning the league title if they finish sixth or higher in Singapore.
World Championship Qualification on the Line
Beyond the League Winners title, teams are fiercely competing for crucial ranking points to secure their spots in the top eight and qualify for the HSBC SVNS World Championship in Los Angeles.
Following the Hong Kong leg, the qualification picture is becoming clearer. The men's teams who have already secured their places in the World Championship are: Argentina, Fiji, Spain, South Africa, France, New Zealand, Australia, and Great Britain.
In the women's standings, six teams have already booked their tickets to Los Angeles: New Zealand, Australia, France, USA, Canada, and Japan. Brazil currently sits in ninth position and will be aiming to leapfrog either Great Britain or Fiji, who are just five and six points ahead, respectively.
