Singapore - Global pop sensation Lady Gaga's upcoming concert in Singapore has significantly boosted travel demand to the city-state among Indian tourists. According to online travel platform Booking.com, during the period of Lady Gaga's exclusive Singapore show in May, Indian travelers ranked among the top 5 global markets for Singapore accommodation searches. Notably, search volumes surged by 20% in the week following the concert ticket sales announcement.
Lady Gaga's world tour features Singapore as its sole Asian stop, drawing fans from across the Asia Pacific region. Booking.com's data reveals that Australia topped the list for Singapore accommodation searches during the concert period, followed by India in second place. Singapore itself, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom also registered high search volumes.
The Indian travel industry has also observed this burgeoning trend. Rajeev Kale, President & Country Head – Holidays, MICE, Visa of Thomas Cook (India) Limited, stated, "There is strong travel demand noted for music events such as Lady Gaga's concert. We are seeing high interest for flights to Singapore from key metros like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad. Based on bookings made 15 days prior, the average round-trip airfare stands at approximately INR 36,000 (around USD 420) from Delhi, INR 27,000 (around USD 315) from Mumbai, and INR 26,000 (around USD 305) from Bengaluru."
This phenomenon echoes the impact of Taylor Swift's six concerts in Singapore in March of last year, which contributed to 1.48 million visitor arrivals and an estimated SGD 500 million (approximately USD 373.5 million) in tourism revenue for the city-state. This growing influence of musical performances on the tourism sector underscores the rising prominence of 'Music Tourism' in India. Reports from Skift highlight previous instances where concerts by artists like Bryan Adams and Coldplay, along with events like the Lollapalooza music festival, spurred travel among Indians, with an increasing number opting for international trips to see their favorite musicians perform live.
Rajesh Magow, Co-Founder & Group CEO of online travel platform MakeMyTrip, noted in a January earnings call that large-scale concerts and events are driving increased tourism demand, aligning with Skift's 2025 Megatrends. He pointed to the Coldplay concert held in Mumbai, where approximately 75% of attendees were from outside the city, and highlighted strong demand for international events like Coldplay's concerts in Abu Dhabi.
S.D. Nandakumar, President & Country Head of B2C & Corporate Travel at SOTC Travel, affirmed the growing appeal of music concerts as a travel motivator, stating, "We have witnessed a significant uptick in customer interest over the past year." He elaborated that this trend is prominent across diverse traveler segments, including millennials and Gen Z, multi-generational families, couples, working professionals, and groups of friends.
During the Skift India Forum last month, Daniel D'souza, Co-Founder & President (Leisure, B2C Travel, Financial Services & Trade-Fair) at DreamSetGo, described live event tourism as "exploding," attributing it to "younger Indians' propensity to embrace popular culture from across the globe. With increased screen time, it's all about providing opportunities to connect with people."
Rajeev Kale from Thomas Cook (India) also noted that Indian travelers attending the Lady Gaga concert are increasingly combining their concert trips with exploring Singapore's local experiences. "Travelers are incorporating visits to Universal Studios, the Singapore Flyer, Minion Land, the Museum of Ice Cream, Night Safari, and indulging in shopping into their itineraries," he mentioned.
Adding to this trend, SOTC Travel's Nandakumar observed, "Interestingly, we are also seeing a preference for multi-destination itineraries, with travelers extending their Singapore trip to nearby destinations like Malaysia, Thailand, Bintan, and Sabah, moving beyond single-destination travel. We have also received increased customer queries for Singapore-Malaysia cruises."
The phenomenon of music concerts driving international travel demand is projected to expand further. With a strong inclination among younger generations to seek unique experiences by attending performances of their favorite artists, music tourism is poised to become a crucial growth driver for the travel industry.
