Cheonan-Asan Area Selected for KRW 59 Billion Project, Aiming for February 2027 Completion and Enhanced Railway System Management

South Chungcheong Province has announced the establishment of the "National Railway IT Center" (철도 IT운영센터), a facility poised to centralize and manage all data related to the Republic of Korea's railway network. The Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL) held a groundbreaking ceremony on April 24th at the construction site near the KTX Cheonan-Asan Station in Baebang-eup, Asan City, marking the commencement of this significant project.

The ceremony was attended by approximately 150 individuals, including Governor Kim Tae-heum of South Chungcheong Province, Asan City Mayor Oh Se-hyun, KORAIL President Han Moon-hee, national and provincial assembly members, and local residents. The event proceeded with a project progress report followed by a commemorative groundbreaking ceremony.

The KORAIL Railway IT Operating Center, successfully secured by the province, will serve as a central hub for the integrated management of the nation's railway information systems and a crucial infrastructure for leading the digital transformation of railway operations. The primary objectives of establishing this new center are to enhance the stability and continuity of railway services and to improve the convenience for railway service users by dualizing, redundantly backing up, and upgrading the existing Seoul Computer Center.

The center will be constructed with a total investment of KRW 59 billion and will encompass a total floor area of 7,107 square meters, featuring four above-ground floors and one underground floor. Completion is scheduled for February 2027.

Upon completion, approximately 200 KORAIL employees will be stationed at the center. Their responsibilities will include the operation of 85 information systems across eight key areas: railway ticket reservation and issuance, year-round reservation and multi-channel sales service provision, train operation management, crew management, logistics and freight transportation management, settlement of nationwide interoperable Rail Plus card transactions and metropolitan railway revenue, and analysis and support for metropolitan railway sales policies.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, Governor Kim Tae-heum emphasized the strategic geographical importance of South Chungcheong Province, stating, "Chungcheongnam-do is like the waist connecting the Seoul metropolitan area and the three southern provinces. There is no place more suitable for overseeing the national railway transportation."

Governor Kim further added, "The new Railway IT Operating Center will be equipped with more advanced facilities than the existing Seoul Computer Center, and we expect it to significantly enhance the convenience of railway usage for both the province's residents and the entire nation." He also pledged the province's full support for the smooth progress of the construction project.

This initiative underscores the government's commitment to modernizing the national railway infrastructure and ensuring efficient and reliable railway services for the public. The establishment of the National Railway IT Center in South Chungcheong Province is anticipated to be a pivotal step towards a more technologically advanced and user-friendly railway system in South Korea.
