DAEJEON, South Korea – Daejeon City successfully concluded its 80th Oral Health Day joint campaign on Wednesday, June 12th, at the City Hall Station Culture Square, drawing over 300 enthusiastic citizens. This landmark event, a core component of Daejeon’s ‘Oral Health Day Commemoration Week’ (June 9-15), underscored the growing public awareness and commitment to oral well-being in an aging society.
The national Oral Health Day, observed annually on June 9th, is a statutory holiday dedicated to promoting the importance of oral hygiene. Its date ingeniously combines the number '6' from "six years old" – the approximate age when the first permanent molars emerge – with the Chinese character '구 (gu),' meaning molar. This year, marking its 80th anniversary, the campaign adopted the meaningful slogan, "80 Years of Oral Health, Partner for the 100-Year Era," advocating for proactive citizen engagement in maintaining lifelong oral health.
The recent campaign was a collaborative triumph, orchestrated by Daejeon City and the Daejeon Integrated Health Promotion Project Support단 (Support Group). A wide array of essential partners joined forces, including the five district public health centers, the Daejeon Dental Association, the Daejeon & Sejong Chapter of the Korean Dental Hygienists Association, and the Department of Dental Hygiene at Daejeon Health Institute. This robust partnership exemplifies a comprehensive approach to public health outreach.
Experiential Learning and Expert Guidance Drive Engagement
The event at City Hall Station was brimming with interactive, experience-based programs designed to educate and empower attendees. Citizens had the opportunity to undergo oral examinations, participate in demonstrations of proper toothbrushing techniques, and receive dental plaque checks. Consultations for fluoride varnish application were also available, providing personalized advice on preventive care. Engaging oral health quizzes and the distribution of informative promotional materials further enhanced the learning experience.
A particularly popular feature was the series of hands-on booths staffed by dental professionals, including dentists and dental hygienists. Their expert guidance allowed participants to directly assess their oral health status and receive tailored recommendations. The distribution of practical commemorative gifts, including essential oral hygiene products, proved highly effective in encouraging sustained oral care practices beyond the event.
Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive. One citizen remarked, "It was so beneficial to actually get my teeth checked and receive education right away." Another commented, "Coming with my children, we naturally learned about oral health facts we never knew before."
Early Education and Ongoing Outreach
Earlier on the same day, the Daejeon Dental Association hosted a free oral examination for infants and toddlers from kindergartens and daycare centers at the Daejeon Institute of Science and Technology gymnasium. This proactive initiative aimed at fostering healthy oral habits from a young age, laying a crucial foundation for future oral health.
Beyond the main campaign event, Daejeon City's commitment to oral health extends throughout the commemorative week. The five district public health centers are actively delivering "life-integrated oral health services" by visiting local schools, welfare facilities, and senior citizen centers. These outreach programs provide practical, action-oriented education for all age groups, encompassing services such as fluoride application, comprehensive oral health education, and denture care guidance.
Jeong Tae-young, Director of Daejeon City's Sports and Health Bureau, emphasized the fundamental importance of oral health, stating, "Oral health is a basic part of daily life and an essential condition for a healthy life in the 100-year era." He expressed hope that "this commemorative campaign served as an opportunity for citizens to once again recognize the importance of oral health and translate that awareness into consistent practice."
The success of Daejeon’s 80th Oral Health Day campaign highlights a growing national commitment to proactive health management and underscores the critical role of community engagement and professional collaboration in achieving a healthier, longer-living population.
