Andong, South Korea - In a press conference held in conjunction with World OKTA (Overseas Korean Traders Association) President Park Jong-beom for the upcoming 2025 World Korean Business Convention, Andong Mayor Kwon Ki-chang passionately appealed for increased tourism to the region, emphasizing that "travel to Andong is an act of donation." The press briefing took place at the Andong Convention Center on April 28th, the opening day of the prestigious international event.

Mayor Kwon addressed concerns some may have about visiting Andong in the aftermath of the recent devastating wildfires that ravaged a significant portion of the city. "Many may feel hesitant, thinking it inappropriate to travel to Andong where wildfires occurred, but this is absolutely not the case," he asserted. On the contrary, Mayor Kwon stressed that by visiting Andong and engaging in local spending, tourists would directly contribute to the recovery efforts and provide much-needed support to the affected residents.

The mayor highlighted the extensive damage inflicted by the wildfires that swept through the region in March. "Last month's wildfires tragically burned across one-third of Andong's total area," he stated, further noting that the combined impact on neighboring regions including Uiseong, Cheongsong, Yeongyang, and Yeongdeok resulted in approximately 5,000 displaced individuals across Gyeongsangbuk-do province.

Expressing his gratitude for the outpouring of support, Mayor Kwon acknowledged the financial assistance received from organizations like World OKTA and numerous individuals and groups from overseas. He also mentioned his recent efforts in Seoul to promote Andong's tourism offerings, underscoring the city's resilience and continued appeal as a travel destination.

The wildfires, which raged from March 22nd to 28th across Uiseong, Andong, Cheongsong, Yeongyang, and Yeongdeok, inflicted an estimated 1.1 trillion KRW (approximately $800 million USD) in property damage, encompassing both public and private infrastructure. Within Andong alone, over 1,800 homes were destroyed, leaving approximately 1,000 residents displaced and temporarily residing in hotels, motels, community centers, and even a gymnasium.

Providing an update on the recovery efforts, Mayor Kwon reported that the city is working diligently to demolish the fire-damaged residences, with 40% of the demolition process already completed. Furthermore, he expressed optimism that 90% of the displaced residents would be able to return to new housing by mid-May, indicating an accelerated pace in the provision of new homes.

Andong, a city steeped in rich cultural heritage and renowned for its historical sites, including the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Hahoe Folk Village and Dosan Seowon Confucian Academy, has long been a significant tourist draw in South Korea. The recent wildfires, while causing immense hardship, have not diminished the city's intrinsic charm and the warm hospitality of its people. Local businesses, from restaurants serving Andong's famous jjimdak (braised chicken) and heotjesabap (a dish resembling a memorial service meal) to craft shops showcasing traditional arts, are eager to welcome visitors and contribute to the economic revitalization of the region.

The "Travel is Donation" campaign aims to leverage the inherent economic benefits of tourism to aid the recovery process. By choosing Andong as their travel destination, both domestic and international tourists can directly inject financial support into the local economy, helping businesses stay afloat and providing livelihoods for residents, including those who have been directly affected by the fires. This initiative underscores a unique and compassionate approach to disaster recovery, where the act of experiencing the city's cultural treasures and natural beauty becomes a tangible contribution to its rebuilding.

Moreover, tourism can play a vital role in lifting the spirits of the community and demonstrating solidarity in the face of adversity. The presence of visitors can serve as a powerful reminder of the outside world's support and belief in Andong's future. Engaging with local culture and interacting with residents can foster a sense of hope and resilience, crucial elements in the long journey of recovery.

The 2025 World Korean Business Convention, hosted in Andong, presents a significant opportunity to showcase the city's enduring appeal and its determination to rebuild. The presence of prominent overseas Korean business leaders will not only bring economic activity but also provide a platform to share Andong's story of resilience with a global audience. Mayor Kwon's proactive engagement with this international event highlights the city's commitment to leveraging all available avenues for recovery and growth.

In the coming months, Andong will undoubtedly continue its efforts to rebuild infrastructure and provide support to its displaced residents. However, the success of the "Travel is Donation" campaign hinges on the willingness of tourists to choose Andong as their next destination. By doing so, they will not only experience the unique charm and cultural richness of this historic city but also become active participants in its recovery, turning their travel into a meaningful act of solidarity and support. Andong, with its resilient spirit and unwavering hospitality, stands ready to welcome visitors and embark on this journey of recovery together.
