Chester County, SC – A pall of sorrow has fallen over the Lexington School District Two community following a devastating single-vehicle accident involving a school bus on Thursday afternoon. The incident, which occurred on Interstate 77 in Chester County, South Carolina, resulted in the death of a 13-year-old eighth-grade student from Pine Ridge Middle School and left numerous others injured.

The school bus, carrying approximately 35 students and two adult chaperones, was en route back to Pine Ridge Middle School in Lexington County after a field trip to an unspecified location outside of Charlotte, North Carolina. The tragedy unfolded at approximately 1:47 p.m. when, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol Sergeant Tyler Tidwell, the southbound bus veered off the right side of the interstate, collided with a guardrail, and overturned.

The Chester County Coroner, Terry Tinker, identified the deceased student as a 13-year-old eighth grader at Pine Ridge Middle School, confirming the profound loss felt by the school and the wider community.

Emergency responders swiftly descended upon the scene, which depicted the yellow school bus lying on its side, a portion of it resting atop the damaged guardrail. The Chester County Sheriff's Office reported "multiple injuries" among the occupants, although specific details regarding the number and severity of these injuries were not immediately available. Injured students and adults were promptly transported to various medical facilities in the region for treatment.

Lexington School District Two released an updated statement Thursday night, acknowledging the grave incident and the collaborative efforts of numerous agencies. Two additional school buses, also returning from the same field trip, were able to maneuver and avoid direct involvement in the crash.

Between the three buses, an estimated 35 students and four adults underwent medical assessment at the scene. Subsequently, these individuals were transported for further medical evaluation as a precautionary measure, highlighting the extensive impact of the accident.

The response to the emergency was a concerted effort involving multiple agencies, including local EMS, fire departments, law enforcement from Chester County and surrounding areas, and school district personnel. Their coordinated efforts focused on securing the scene, providing immediate medical assistance, and ensuring the well-being of all those involved.

Lexington School District Two expressed deep gratitude for the swift and dedicated response of the emergency services. "We are grateful for the support of our EMS, first responder, and law enforcement partners, both those based here locally and those up the road at the affected Interstate 77 sites," the district stated. "They worked tirelessly today to assist our Lexington Two students, families and employees."

The South Carolina Highway Patrol has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the tragic collision. Their inquiry will likely focus on factors such as the condition of the bus, driver actions, and any potential external influences that may have contributed to the rollover, including the reported tire blowout.

In the wake of this heartbreaking event, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster issued a statement conveying his condolences and support. "Today’s school bus accident in Chester County is a tragedy no family should ever have to endure," Governor McMaster said. "Please join us in praying for the victim, their family, a speedy recovery for those injured, and the entire Lexington Two community. All of South Carolina is with you."

The community now grapples with the shock and grief of this sudden loss, offering support to the grieving family and praying for the recovery of those injured. School officials are expected to provide counseling and support services to students and staff in the days and weeks ahead as they navigate this difficult time. The investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol is ongoing, with updates expected as more information becomes available regarding the circumstances surrounding this tragic accident.
