DAEJEON, SOUTH KOREA – In a timely observance of the 55th annual Earth Day and the encompassing Climate Change Week, Daejeon Metropolitan City is set to host a significant commemorative seminar on Tuesday, April 23rd. Under the insightful theme, “Carbon Neutrality, Another Name for Healthy Living,” the event underscores the intrinsic link between environmental sustainability and individual well-being. The seminar will convene at the Daejeon City Hall, situated on the third floor, promising a platform for expert discourse and public engagement on pressing environmental and health concerns.

The initiative is a collaborative effort spearheaded by Daejeon City and the Daejeon Climate Change Council, with the dedicated support of the Daejeon Carbon Neutrality Support Center and the Daejeon Environmental Health Center. The program is meticulously structured around two pivotal themes: the role of a ‘Low-Carbon Diet and Carbon Neutrality,’ and the intricate relationship between ‘Climate and Health.’ A distinguished panel of experts will lead the discussions, including Jang Nam-jeong, the esteemed Director of the Jeonbuk Carbon Neutrality Support Center; Lim Hyun-gu, the innovative CEO of the local agricultural venture Daejeon Farm × Round Tree; Jeong Eun-hee, the knowledgeable Director of the Atopy/Asthma Information and Education Center; and Kim Dong-hee, a respected Professor from Daejeon University.

The seminar will unfold across two distinct sessions, each designed to delve into specific facets of the overarching theme. The inaugural session will illuminate the considerable positive impact of adopting a predominantly vegetable-based, low-carbon dietary lifestyle as a tangible contribution to achieving carbon neutrality. Furthermore, this segment will explore practical and innovative carbon neutrality implementation strategies within the agricultural sector, a critical area for emissions reduction and sustainable practices.

The subsequent session will address the increasingly pertinent issue of climate change-related health challenges. With a focus on the escalating prevalence of ailments such as allergies in the context of the ongoing climate crisis, the session aims to provide valuable insights into effective health management strategies and preventative measures. This discussion will highlight the direct consequences of environmental degradation on public health, emphasizing the urgency of addressing climate change from a health perspective.

Mr. Moon Chang-yong, the Director of Daejeon City’s Environment Bureau, articulated the city’s vision for the seminar, stating, "Carbon neutrality should not be perceived as an abstract or unattainable goal. Rather, it is the cumulative effect of conscious daily choices, such as embracing a low-carbon diet. We sincerely hope that this seminar will serve as a valuable opportunity for citizens to deepen their understanding of how to effectively respond to the climate crisis while simultaneously safeguarding their own health and the well-being of the community."

This timely seminar reflects Daejeon City's proactive stance in addressing the intertwined challenges of climate change and public health. By bringing together experts from diverse fields, the city aims to foster a greater understanding of the actionable steps individuals and communities can take towards a sustainable and healthy future. The event is anticipated to be a significant contribution to the ongoing dialogue surrounding environmental responsibility and its direct impact on the lives of citizens. As Climate Change Week progresses, Daejeon’s initiative serves as a compelling example of local governments taking concrete steps towards a greener and healthier tomorrow.
