Building on a Trade History Dating Back to the Inca Empire to Forge a New Era of Cooperation

Peru is actively working to strengthen its strategic economic cooperation with Paraguay. The Peruvian Embassy in Paraguay has announced the dispatch of a trade mission of Peruvian export companies to Asunción, Paraguay, on April 8th and 9th. The primary goal of this mission is to establish strategic alliances between companies from both countries and to expand trade in differentiated, high-quality products.

The event is expected to draw participation from Peruvian export companies as well as Paraguayan importers, distributors, supermarkets, wholesalers, retailers, trade agents, and businesses from various other sectors. Key target sectors include retail, supermarkets, hotels, restaurants, cafes, gourmet food stores, natural and health food stores, casual clothing stores, department stores, veterinary clinics, and companies related to livestock and the environment.

María Antonia Masana, the Peruvian Ambassador to Paraguay, stated, "Trade between Paraguay and Peru dates back to the colonial era, with active commerce in yerba mate and cotton." She emphasized, "Today, we are taking significant steps to re-establish these connections and continuously exchange goods." She added that it is crucial for both countries to recognize each other's immense potential, moving beyond simply Peru selling to Paraguay and vice versa.

Carlos Arévalo, Peru's Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, explained, "Over the past 30 years, Peru has made tremendous efforts to position itself as a South American export powerhouse, and today, through the qualitative and quantitative growth of the agro-industrial sector, it has become the third-largest exporter in the region." He stated that this trade mission will showcase a variety of high-quality Peruvian products with strong potential for success in the Paraguayan market.

The mission will include a total of 10 companies from sectors such as food (superfoods, Andean grains, cereals, spices, instant desserts, fruits, vegetables, frozen seafood like scallops, beer, mixers, wine, and pisco), textile companies producing cotton apparel, and companies related to animal health and nutrition. Notably, small and medium-sized enterprises producing pisco, Peru's national spirit, will also participate, focusing on introducing Peruvian culture and high-quality products to the Paraguayan market.

Peru will showcase a variety of high-quality agricultural products that do not compete with the local market, including blueberries, of which Peru has become the world's leading exporter. Additionally, textile products made from Peruvian Pima cotton, known for its exceptional durability and softness, are expected to attract the attention of Paraguayan consumers.

Ambassador Masana noted, "Peru operates industrial plants in several countries in the region, but has not yet ventured into Paraguay." She expressed her hope that "this opportunity will allow Peruvian companies to recognize not only the Paraguayan market but also the expanded market potential of Mercosur (the Southern Common Market)."

Furthermore, Peru emphasized its potential to provide Paraguay with new export opportunities. With the upcoming opening of Peru's Port of Chancay in 2024, Paraguayan companies will be able to transport their products to the Asian market in just 23 days. Ambassador Masana added, "We can offer not only a variety of high-quality products but also serve as an important gateway, helping Paraguayan products become more competitive in the Asian market with lower logistics costs."

The main event of the trade mission, a business matchmaking session, will be held on April 8th and 9th at the Plaza Park Building in Asunción. Paraguayan companies interested in importing Peruvian products can register through the pre-registration website (https://bit.ly/registro_RDPEPY), and detailed information can be obtained by contacting WhatsApp (+595 981) 600 313. The list of participating Peruvian companies can be found at the following link: (https://bit.ly/directorio_empresaspe).

This event is co-organized by the Association of Peruvian Exporters (ADEX) and the Peruvian Embassy in Paraguay, with the support of the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Paraguayan-Peruvian Chamber of Commerce, Rediex, NM Transporte & Logística, the Sheraton Hotel, and the Aloft Hotel.
